Corduroy: fabric, its types and features

Corduroy - the fabric is strong, hairy, with scarves on the front side. It consists of viscose or cotton, rarely made of synthetic fibers.

History of material occurrence

This material first appeared in the Middle Ages, when it began to be used for the manufacture of curtains. Later, the French began to use when sewing clothes for crowned persons, then very expensive corduroy. Fabric instantly became popular and by the nineteenth century "reached" and to Russia. True, as an upholstery for furniture. But to sew clothes from corduroy in our country became only in the last century.

Variety in our days

Today, there are several types of this fabric: corduroy cord with wide scarves and high pile, which is formed due to the very high density of the thread along the duck. Much more than the density of threads on the base. This tight corduroy - the fabric is a little heavy, so it is suitable for summer shoes or light coats. In addition to corduroy cord, there is a so-called velveteen-scar (with low pile), which is often used for sewing children's clothes and raincoats. There are also options with ornamentation and even bleached pile (under hoarfrost). All corduroy fabrics are produced as smoothly colored, and with different printed patterns, and velveteen, painted black, is called black velveteen. Currently, velvet is produced not only with longitudinal scars, but also with transverse, and even oblique - options for every taste. If you decide to sew yourself a suit, dress or jacket, then you will be fine with corduroy. The fabric is very practical, because it combines a low price and good durability. Also to the pluses is the fact that it practically does not crumple and is very pleasant for the body. In addition, the corduroy fabric is very well combined with other materials: linen, leather, guipure and many others.

Care for corduroy at home

Clothing and shoes from corduroy should be provided with decent care. Since corduroy is a natural cotton fabric, it can give a strong shrinkage after washing. Therefore clothes from this fabric should be washed only in warm water, the temperature of which should be thirty to thirty-five degrees. Strongly rub and twist products from corduroy is not recommended. Generally, it is better to take out such material from the dry-cleaning department in order to accurately prevent damage to the pile and other troubles. At home, stains from corduroy items should be gently blotted off, rather than rubbed, gently choosing a stain remover. To iron products from this specific fabric is necessary only from the inside, using steam, since, smoothing corduroy without steam, you can severely damage the pile. To iron it is necessary on a soft surface (for example, on a terry towel, laid over an ironing board). If the product is rather wrinkled and can not do without smoothing from the front side, then you need to do this carefully, without pressing the iron. Before you start ironing, it's best to try on an unnecessary cut of fabric.
