Chekhov, "Surgery": a summary of Chekhov's "Surgery" - what is the story about?

It is known that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is the author of many short humorous stories. As part of describing the characters of his characters, he was an unsurpassed master. His characters "revived" in the works. "You read one of them, and then you look out the window and see the continuation of it in life. All the heroes of the author's stories are the inhabitants of our town. Their conversations, appearance, clothes, manners: everything literally seemed to be snatched from Chekhov's books. " So talked about the master KI I. Chukovsky. Anton Pavlovich's story "Surgery" was written by him in the style of realism. This is a small episode from the life of the Zemstvo hospital. The main characters are a paramedic named Kuryatin and the deacon of the local church Vonmiglas who came to see him. The following is a summary of Chekhov's "Surgery".

Vonmiglasov comes to the reception

Zemsky hospital. In view of the fact that the doctor left to marry, the reception is conducted by the medical assistant Sergei Kuzmich Kuryatin. This is a full-grown man of about forty untidy species. He wears a worn jacket and trousers. He sits and smokes a cigar that spreads the stench. At the reception comes the local sexton Vonmiglasov. This is an elderly tall man. He is dressed in a brown cassock with a wide leather belt. Entering, he looks for the icon with his eyes, and if he does not find a doctor in the office, he is baptized with a carbolic solution standing next to him. Then the deacon takes out the prosphora from the folds of his clothes and puts it in front of Kuryatin. To the question of the paramedic, "What are you complaining about?" Vonmiglasov replies that he suffers from a strong toothache, such that "at least lie down and die." The last night before the reception the deacon did not sleep, and now he very much hopes that the "rescuer" paramedic will save him from this nightmare. It would seem that a distressing situation is the patient's unbearable toothache. What can you look at here? What can be ridiculed? But the author, a master of humorous and satirical genre, then so comically delineates the main characters that it is impossible to keep from smiling. We read Chekhov's story "Surgery".

Flattery of the sexton

The paramedic orders his ward to sit on a chair and open his mouth. The sexton hastily carries out his instruction. Kuryatin frowns and sees in his mouth a sick tooth with a large cannon. All this time Vonmiglasov never ceases to speak. He tells the doctor that the deacon's father told him to put vodka with horseradish to the gum, Glickeria Anisomovna gave him a string from Mount Athos and advised her mouth to rinse warm milk ... Nothing helped. To this, Kuryatin says that, they say, all this is prejudice, that only medicine can cure a sick tooth. And the solution here is the same - you have to tear the tooth. Here the deacon starts to flatter the paramedic, calling him "benefactor" and promising to pray for him day and night afterwards. Chicken praise is pleasant. He smiles and says that it is a business for him to "spit once." As an example, he cites the case of the landowner Alexander Ivanovich of Egypt, when he came to Churyatin with a sick tooth and asked him to tear. Sergei Kuzmich, who had never done this before, did everything right. Even Chekhov's brief "Surgery" is able to convey the character of the main characters. At the beginning of the story, Kuryatin is important and boastful. He makes significant mines, tries to "bring a fog", using incomprehensible sexton medical terms. And the latter, in turn, is polite with the doctor, courteous. Vonmiglasov in advance praises him for the result, flattered him. On his face is a mask of humility and full trust in this unlucky "light of science." How will the speech of the characters change, their relationship to each other, we will see later.

The procedure begins

The patient, not tired of praising the doctor, sits, wide-open mouth. Kuryatin with an important appearance says that it is necessary to break teeth with knowledge: sometimes you can limit yourself only to a key or goat's leg, and in some cases you may need forceps. The paramedic takes the goat's leg off the table first, looks at it, then puts it back, takes the forceps and starts to work, asking the patient to open his mouth wider. The story of Chekhov's "Surgery" tells about the procedure of tooth extraction . The brief content of the work will reveal to us all the subtleties of this uneasy surgical intervention.

"Seven Circles of Hell" by Vonmiglasov

The sexton squeezes his eyes shut. A few minutes in the office, the words "Mother Holy ...", "Fathers of benefactors ...", "Ввв ..." are heard. Kuryatin, all in suspense, drags a tooth, crying out at times: "It's not like his! Do not grab with your hands! Now…". Vonmiglasov, unable to bear the pain of hell, shout: "Fathers! The Guardians! Angels! Help ... Yes, pull it! "The doctor pulls with all his might, but in vain. The patient bulges his eyes, raises his legs high, moves his fingers. His face turns purple, tears appear. It takes another painful half a minute. Kuryatin tramples around him, but there is still no result. When reading these lines, we have a picture before our eyes: a poor patient sits on a chair, opening his mouth and waving his hands in pain. And beside him stands the doctor, rolling up his sleeves, and dragging the tooth with pincers. The same image will appear before the eyes of a reader familiar with the story of Anton Pavlovich, when he hears the words: "Chekhov. Surgery". Very brief content of the work is given here, and it conveys the main meaning of the author's creation.

Doctor's failure

Suddenly the forceps slide off the tooth. The patient and the doctor are hard at translating the spirit. Then the deacon climbs his fingers in his mouth and discovers that the ill-fated tooth is still in place. He starts to reproach the doctor for pulling too long. Kuryatin, in turn, is justified and tries to prove that the patient himself is to blame: grabbed by the hands, stirred, kicked, that's the result of zero. The paramedic seated his client, intending to repeat the attempt to wrest the sick tooth. He asks for a moment to take a breath, and again prepares for execution. Vonmiglasov gives the doctor advice not to pull, but immediately pull. To this, Kuryatin mockingly notices the sexton that it is not to read the teeth in the choir, or to drum into the bells. "Surgery is not an easy thing" - it follows from all his remarks. The paramedic is pulling the tooth, but again he does not work. He tries to yank, the patient screams. And suddenly - crunch. The tooth broke, and the spine remained in the gum. Further, by reading Chekhov's short summary "Surgery", one can be sure that the main characters have not shown wisdom. The patient, angry, cursing with curses, left with nothing. And the doctor, instead of somehow correcting the situation, entered into a squabble with him.

The reproaches of the sexton

Kuryatin looks puzzled and speaks in a barely audible voice: "This sort of thing. And what if I had a goat's leg ... ". The patient first does not understand what happened. He sits, goggling his eyes, then climbs into his mouth and says: "Lousy devil! Why are you, Herods, only here planted? "Kuryatin tries to object to him, saying that Mr. Alexander Ivanovich of Egypt, having passed through this test, did not swear at all. But Vonmiglasov, spouting curses and taking the prosphora, leaves home. We read the summary of the story "Surgery". Chekhov in his work ridicules pomposity, stupidity, rudeness, riches and bragging. The final of the story remains open. This is a feature of most of the author's works. Thus, he as if offers the reader to come up with his own end to this story.

After reading Chekhov's short "Surgery", we understand that in life there are many situations that seem at first sight to be tragic, and only the author's talent turns the everyday scene into an immortal humorous work.
