Bumper painting - tips and tricks

The car bumper performs the most important function - it protects the car body from various mechanical damages. But this does not mean that it is able to fully protect all the details and aggregates of your iron friend from a head-on collision at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. But in the parking lot, with minor accidents, the bumper perfectly copes with its function - it takes the whole impact on itself, protecting the rest of the cladding. But after an accident in front of the driver there is a need to buy a new bumper, because even the slightest dent can greatly spoil the appearance of the car. However, not all the details of the facings can coincide by the shade - it can turn out that the new part will be somewhat lighter or darker. In this case, you need to carefully select the color.

Can I refrain from buying a new bumper?

It is worth saying that you can avoid big money costs by contacting a maintenance station. Every STO has a service like repair or painting a bumper. On most modern cars, the bumpers are made of plastic. Thanks to this professional masters in a few hours will be able to fully restore its original appearance.

Painting a bumper with your own hands - is it possible?

Plastic is more amenable to repair, and with a slight dent or scratch, you can not even turn to the service station, and do everything yourself, saving a certain amount of money. Repair of the rear bumper, as well as the front, in the service center is worth a lot of money. And if you own a domestic car, then it's best to do it yourself. It is not necessary to have any special instruments: all you need is a special grinding paper, a primer, a high-pressure compressor and, of course, the paint itself.

The painting of the bumper is divided into several stages, adhering to which, you can restore all the lost properties yourself.

  1. First, you need to remove all the color from the surface of the plastic, before disassembling the bumper. This is done with the help of special paper for grinding, which can be found in any specialized store.
  2. After grinding, thoroughly wipe and degrease the surface with a special solvent and proceed to the priming process (you should make no more than two layers). Remember that there are cans for metal surfaces, and there are - for plastic ones. Using the first type of primer coating on a plastic bumper, you risk premature wear of the paint, as it will not hold well.
  3. In case of defects (so-called "scars") on the plastic surface, it is recommended that they be thoroughly ground before reaching a perfectly flat surface.
  4. Sand the primer with sandpaper before it becomes dull.
  5. Feel free to start painting. The bumper is painted in one or two coats of varnish.
  6. Bring the paint to dryness and set the bumper back to your car.
