Analysis of the work - it's easy!

Each of us was once a schoolboy, and, perhaps, everyone, with all the love for such a beautiful subject as literature, did not really like to dig into the text of a literary work, trying to find out what there, in fact, is not there. The operation of searching for the hidden meaning has a beautiful and very interesting name - the analysis of a literary work. In this article, we popularly explain how to do it.

First of all, in order to make a normal analysis of the work, you need to read it. Ideally, you need to read the full version of the book, but if you are tight in time and do not burn with a desire to read, the reader will also approach. Remember that your best friends at the time of reading should be a small notebook and pencil, where you will methodically record everything that is useful for analysis. And the following can be useful.

The composition of the work is a breakdown into chapters, parts or other logical sections. It is important to understand by what principle the division is going - in chronology, in the logic of the plot, in the place of action, or in some other way. In analyzing a work, you must first of all describe what parts it consists of.

However, breaking the work into separate logical sections, do not forget that you are still dealing with a single semantic whole, the story lines of which can pass through the entire narrative. That's why you need to list all the main characters in the second section of this type of work, such as analyzing the work, then briefly describe the storyline concerning each of them. This will help to quickly structure the content of the work both for yourself and for the person who will be reading your research.

And then ... Then creativity begins! Do not forget that literature is a free matter, and you, by and large, are free to perceive the contents of each book you read as you see fit. Describe the feelings that caused you to read the book (but if the only feeling that you have is the feeling of hopelessly lost time, better do not mention it), but do not forget that your speech should still be logical and consistent With what you wrote in the first two sections. The combination of strict logic and fantasy flight - that's what a proper analysis of a work of art is!

You also need to pay attention to what artistic means the author uses in his creation. Yes, it is necessary to recall the theory of literature, and try to catch from memory the definitions of such words as "epithet", "metaphor", "hyperbole" and many others. Without this, no way - if you do not mention how the author tried to influence the reader's consciousness, do not explain how he tried to make us think about something that can be found only between the lines, then your work is not an analysis of the work, But only his retelling. Agree that just a paraphrase of any book, even if very detailed, will not reach the full analysis. And to better understand the difference between analysis and retelling, we advise reading examples of literary criticism.

And the last. Most of the time, such voluminous work as the analysis of a work is asked long enough before the deadline - as a rule, we are talking about two or three weeks allocated for writing work. We advise not to postpone the task for the last day - once you have been given the analysis, read the book immediately and make small notes, then do not go back to the product for a few days, but let it "lie back" in the mind. This will help in the subsequent use of the text of the work while writing analytical work, quickly navigate in it, and will also form an integral, well-established impression of what has been read. We wish you a successful analytical work!
