Adjustable valve - types of control and design features

In all pipelines without exception, the product is transported under certain pressure. In order to block its flow, a stop valve is used, and an adjustable valve is one of its varieties. With its help, it is possible to narrow to a minimum or maximize the cross-sectional area in the pipe. Accordingly, the product, whether water, alkali or oil, will flow a small trickle or be thrown out of the tap under pressure. Here it should be noted that the adjustable valve does not serve to block the flow completely, and then open it. To do this, stop valves are used. It is only needed to control the pressure in the system.

Types of management

If in the domestic pipeline the adjustable valve is under manual control, then in the industrial operation different types of drive mechanisms are used. The sensors are fixed to the armature, which remove the indicators of the state of the transported product. The received information is transferred to the microcontrollers connected to the drive, which is triggered by their signal. He moves the adjustable valve to a new position. The types of control depend on the drive mechanism:

  • Pneumatic actuator.
  • Electromagnetic drive.
  • Electric.
  • Drive with hydraulic mechanism.

Some enterprises still use manual control, but this is becoming a rarity. But the control valve with electric drive has the widest range of applications in industrial conditions.

The actuator is supplied with a force to the valve of the adjustable valve. It consists of two elements: a saddle and a plunger. The seat is in the body in a stationary state. But the plunger controls the flow. When it narrows the cross section, the velocity of the fluid or gas changes and the pressure in the pipeline changes. If the plunger enters the saddle, the cross section becomes minimal. In pipelines with high throughput valves with double-seat closures are used, which provide more effective pressure control.

Economic forces

Economic efficiency from the use of certain valves depends on many factors, including the type of fasteners. It can be welded, chisel, flanged, mounted on a coupling or a trunnion. The reliability of the connection makes it possible to operate the regulating valve for a long time. The price of installation, the complexity of maintenance and care of the drive mechanisms ultimately determines the profitability of the pipeline. The welded joint is reliable and inexpensive in cost, but it can only be used for steel valves.

Constructive differences

Despite the apparent similarity with the stop valves, the adjustable valves have their own characteristics in the design. First of all, it is necessary to choose a variant with a given flow direction. Next, you should pay attention to which part of the pipeline is needed for the valve. If it is designed for a level, not changing the direction of the route, then a check valve will do. In systems with bends, use angular structures. There are mixers with several nozzles. For example, a three-way valve has two inputs and one output.
