Words that they did not know about 30 years ago are actively used today

Our language is constantly transformed and changing to meet the needs of people in communication. Many words that we use on an ongoing basis are borrowed. The champion in the distribution of neologisms is English, which has no strict rules. Even in the time of Shakespeare, about 1700 new words were invented, and today's scientific and technological revolution allows new terms to be born as mushrooms after heavy rain. What does the modern vocabulary look like? Here are examples of words that we did not know anything about three decades ago.

Selfie

This phenomenon was originally part of the slang of social networks, but now is a full-fledged dweller of the lexicon in many languages of the world. The first use of the word "SELFI" was recorded in 2002 in one of the Australian print media. And only ten years later the term, meaning the imprint of oneself on the camera, gained wide popularity. This is due to the massive consumption of media platforms. Even today, even prominent politicians do not deny themselves the pleasure of making a SELFI with any of his international colleagues. Thank for the introduction of this word in everyday life we should be a new-fashioned gadget, which will be discussed later.

Smartphone

If you called your phone smart 30 years ago, you probably would be twisted around your temple by the people around you, looking at you. Even if people from the past could see this sleek and colorful design of the smartphone, they would not likely change their mind. No one has ever thought that a portable electronic device can be so smart. But now we can not imagine our life without them, thanks to the Internet and a bunch of useful mobile applications. We use them for work, for interactive communication, for games like an alarm clock, as a flashlight, as a photo and video camera, as a navigator, as a dictaphone and as a notebook. For the first time the word "smartphone" was used in 1996, but firmly entrenched in the lexicon somewhere in the middle of the first decade of the XXI century.

hoody

Since 1990, the word "Tolstoyka" has won its positions. Comfortable knitted jacket with a hood - this is not news in the world of street fashion. Remember the times of medieval Europe, when city dwellers walked through the streets in cloaks with a hood covering them from the rain. In the 30 years of the twentieth century, just about the same as today dresses the youth, the farm laborers dressed in the cool state of New York. The first popularity of the sweatshirt was noted after the release of the film about the boxer Rocky Balboa. Well, a fashionable wave on its crown attribute of clothing was launched by hip-hop performers. As you can see, it took almost 60 years for this word to take root in the lexicon.

Generation of two thousandths

The phrase "generation of two thousandths" continues to gain popularity with the growth of those who were born in the new century. However, this speech turnover has a broader meaning. You could have been born in the 80s or 90s, but you will be a "two thousandth generation" for people who are older than you and who disapprove of your way of life. This term is almost always used to express disregard for modern youth. Many mature people do not welcome the desire of the new generation for comprehensive freedom (including choice of sexual partners), their self-confidence and fixation on electronic technologies. People born in the middle of the twentieth century consider young growth hopelessly spoiled and even useless.

Drunken viewing

The next word-combination was born in the digital age, when people had the opportunity to view their favorite TV series online without interruption. Now you do not need to wait until 8 pm to sit in front of the TV screen and watch the next episode. During the evening of the day off, you can easily overpower the entire season. The phrase "drunken watching" arose in 2003. It was then that a new fashion entered the everyday life of the common man: sit down in front of the screen and view all the episodes in the non-stop mode. Lovers of telenovelas, as usual, put before themselves a large bowl of popcorn and beer.

Rasfend (remove from friends)

Another term that gave us social networks. Thanks to this, we no longer say "I'm not friends with him", we prefer to say "I deleted (removed) it from friends." If it were heard by people living 30 years ago, they would think that we are not friends with grammar at all. The term appeared in the early 2000s. On this topic, the director Timur Bekmambetov shot a good horror film.

Photobomb

Even 15 years ago the word "photobomb" would cause bewilderment of your interlocutors. Accidentally spoiled shots probably were observed from the very origins of photo art, but photographers preferred to withhold unsuccessful work from the public. With the flourishing of digital technologies and the growing popularity of social media, you can play a trick on someone from your acquaintances in the most sophisticated way. Just appear in the frame with a stupid face.

Trinkets

You may be surprised, but the word "trinkets" was used even in the Victorian era, in order to describe the jewelry worn by courtiers. The popularity of the word was presented by rap artists, who in the late 90s and early 2000s shot their famous clips about the luxurious life. They were plated with platinum and diamonds, they showed chic cars and surrounded themselves with beautiful women. And let the era of rap ended, we can thank her for a new word in our vocabulary.
