Who is buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery of celebrities?

Vagankovskoe cemetery, probably the most famous necropolis of our time. The history of this place began almost three hundred years ago and continues to this day. It is unlikely that one day it will be possible to establish an accurate list of all those who are buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, even in the last hundred years, not to mention all of its long history. The list of the deceased, who found the last shelter here, according to the most conservative estimates, had to number about half a million names. However, many graves remain nameless.

Plague rebellion and the foundation of the cemetery

One of the latest outbreaks of the plague in Russia in 1770-1772 was marked not only by the mass death of the population, but also by significant popular unrest in Moscow and its district. Disorders managed to be suppressed, however, under the decree of Empress Catherine II, the dead city dwellers were forbidden to bury in the city.

The preventive sanitary measure had an effect, the disease receded, and near Moscow a new necropolis was built in the village of Novoye Vagankovo, where ordinary Muscovites were buried.

Who is buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery? The list of graves in those distant times, of course, no one was leading. In the 18-19th centuries the last refuge was found there, those who died from epidemics, soldiers who fell in the battle of Borodino, died in the Khodynka field and many other victims of wars and historical tragedies.

The Great Patriotic War added Vagankovskomu cemetery of common graves and monuments to defenders of the city.

Do they all remember? Who is buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery from celebrities

Today the biggest cemetery in Moscow is associated with the graves of all our beloved actors, cultural and art figures, politicians - our contemporaries. Meanwhile, many forget that, in fact, the necropolis of celebrities, this place has become more than a hundred years ago. If at the very beginning of its history the Vagankovskoye cemetery could only boast of anonymous brotherly burials and modest tombs of ordinary people, then half a century later it turned into a place of rest for the greatest people of its era.

Among those who are buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, the most famous surnames of the 19th century. These are politicians, military men, cultural figures, writers and artists. Next to the magnificent tombs of famous historical personalities are the modest graves of now almost forgotten people, whose names are known only to specialists.

Memory of the Decembrist uprising

List of buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery can begin with the names of the Decembrists. At present there are only seven of their graves. In one fence there are the tombstones of Alexander Filippovich Frolov and Pavel Sergeyevich Bobrishchev-Pushkin, next to them a stele made of pink marble Ivan Nikolaevicha Thoughintsev.

On the main avenue there is the grave of Mikhail Alexandrovich Bestuzhev. Here, his daughter and sister Elena are buried. A great woman, whose name is undeservedly forgotten by her descendants. It was she who preserved for history a valuable archival artifact - the famous Bestuzhev gallery of portraits of the Decembrists, taking her out of Siberia after the death of her brother.

The monument of black granite crowns the grave of the Decembrist Alexander Petrovich Belyaev, and the tomb of Nikolai Aleksandrovich Zagoretsky is also nearby.

Friends of Alexander Pushkin

Few people remember where the burial place of the greatest poet. No, of course, he does not rest on the Vagankovskoye cemetery. The grave of the classic of Russian literature is in the Svyatogorsk monastery, in the Pskov region. Nevertheless, of those of his contemporaries who are buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, many were closely associated with Pushkin and his family.

So, near the church ensemble are the graves of the poet's close friends: Count Feodor Ivanovich Tolstoy and the famous theatrical figure and composer Alexei Nikolayevich Verestovsky.

Wizards

Famous people buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery did not always end their lives and came to this place in glory and honor. Especially if it was a question of people creative, giving all their strength to art and thinking little about worldly affairs.

The host of outstanding artists, painters and graphic artists, who is buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, is impressive. Vasily Andreevich Tropinin, a great painter of the Romantic era and the founder of the realistic portrait in Russian painting, is buried in a modest grave. He left more than three thousand portraits of his contemporaries and it is his talent and skill in brush that Russian art owes to the development of realism and the appearance of a portrait-type.

VA Tropinin was the first famous artist to be buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery. After him, this Moscow necropolis was the last refuge for such artists as Vasily Ivanovich Surikov, Vasily Vladimirovich Pukirev, Nikolai Alexandrovich Klodt, Aristarkh Vasilievich Lentulov and many others. Wanderers and avant-gardists, illustrators, decorators, graphic artists and painters who created in the 19th and 20th centuries are here.

People buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery and left an indelible mark in history, today mostly forgotten by contemporaries. Many graves have decayed, some do not even have memorable tablets. Nevertheless, they are gradually returning names.

The grave of the author of "Rooks ..."

On the Vagankovskoye cemetery is the grave of the creator of the cult, or, as they say, "archetypal", a work of Russian painting. The famous work "The Rooks Have Arrived" is still known from the school's bench. However, few know the tragic fate of its creator.

Alexey Kondratievich Savrasov is one of the founders of the Association of Traveling Exhibitions, a brilliant painter and teacher. Alas, the last years of his life he spent in poverty. Personal tragedies, with which the artist could not cope, alcoholism and constant need led to the fact that he was completely alone, forgotten and sick. He died in a Moscow hospital for the poor.

Initially, his grave was crowned with the cheapest board of the cross and a modest inscription on it read: "Academician Alexei Kondratievich Savrasov. He was born on May 12, 1830, died on September 26, 1897. " The boards on the cross rotted and collapsed, in the end it disappeared, and the burial place of the great painter was abandoned and for many years forgotten.

However, Isaac Levitan's words about Savrasov turned out to be prophetic: "One of the deepest Russian artists has not come ... With Savrasov appeared lyricism in the painting of the landscape and boundless love for his native land ... and this his undoubted merit in the field of Russian art is never Will be forgotten. "

Today, his grave at the Vagankovskoye cemetery is decorated with a granite obelisk with a laconic inscription: "The outstanding Russian artist Alexei Savrasov, 1830-1897".

The last way of servants Melpomene

The list of celebrities buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery is impressive. Paradoxically, the necropolis that appeared as a result of the greatest tragedies in the history of the state became a favorite place for the burial of theater and film actors, directors, musicians and composers.

According to the legend, the tradition to bury here people of acting professions went from one of the Moscow mayors, whose decree entrusted the actor's people to be buried at Vagankovsky. Perhaps because this cemetery was the largest and it was quick and easy to get to, which reduced the cost of funerals, often held at public expense. However, there is another mystical coincidence: it was at the site of the future necropolis in the 17th century that jesters and buffoons settled.

Today, the number of favorite actors, musicians and singers resting here is difficult to pinpoint. Actors buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery were idols of their time, and the glory of many has not been forgotten so far.

At the entrance there rises a snow-white iceberg-monument in the style of constructivism on the grave of Alexander Abdulov. The original memorial-memorial in the form of a film is reminiscent of Mikhail Pugovkin, beloved by all. Immediately near the grave of "the best in the world of Watson" Vitaly Solomin. Actors Andrei Mironov, Oleg Dal, Leonid Filatov, directors Stanislav Rostotsky and Grigory Chukhrai, author of plays, playwright and satirist Grigory Gorin. Do not count all those who are buried in the Vagankovskoye cemetery from celebrities who have enriched the national and world culture. Below is a list (far from complete, of course, not mentioned in the celebrity text):

  • Aksyonov Vasily is a writer.
  • Alov Alexander - the director.

Two graves of one genius

There is also a monument to Vsevolod Meyerhold. Tragic, like the life of the director himself, is the fate of his grave. For a long time, Meyerhold's circumstances and place of death were kept secret. Only in 1987 it became known his real burial place in the cemetery near the Donskoy Monastery. A black stone stela with the name Meyerhold was installed on the grave of his tragically deceased wife Zinaida Reich 20 years before the discovery of the actual burial place of the reformer of the theatrical direction.

"Faithful Galya"

At the Vagankovskoye cemetery, the poet Sergei Yesenin is buried. The rebellious life and the tragic death of the young genius of poetry attracted the attention of fans and admirers to the place of his repose. Alas, the grave of Sergei Yesenin is notorious. Neither a bust carved into a block of white marble nor a granite basement drowning in flowers can erase the sad facts of the history of this burial. One of the cemetery legends tells that at night a ghost of a young woman appears near the grave.

"I've lost my temper here, although I know that after that even more dogs will hang on Yesenin. But he, and I do not care. In this grave, everything is dear to me ... ".

Perhaps, the basis of this legend lay the sad fate of his friend and assistant Galina Benislavskaya. A year after the poet's death, she shot herself on his grave, leaving the famous suicide note. She remains here, next to her idol. The first inscription on a modest grave: "Faithful Galya" very accurately reflected the essence of her feelings for Yesenin and their complex, drama-filled relationship. However, now a snow-white plate is adorned with long lines from a letter to her poet: "Galya, my dear! I repeat to you that you are very, very dear to me. And you yourself know that without your participation in my destiny it would be very much deplorable. "

A series of suicides, which followed after that at the grave of the "Moscow reveler", enveloped the place with an ominous flush of fatalism and unhappiness. In total, 12 people - all women - committed suicide here.

Idols of millions

What celebrities are buried in the Vagankovskoye cemetery and what stories and legends envelop their death and place of repose, it is difficult to count. The grave of Vladimir Semenovich Vysotsky was no exception. A slightly pretentious monument depicts everyone's favorite singer and entertainer expressive, torn as he was during his lifetime. On the one hand - a portrait, on the other - a monument-allegory, the leitmotif of which were the lines of the prophetic song of the artist "Cony fastidious." Pathetic, strange monument. Witnesses of Vysotsky's funeral claimed that his widow, Marina Vladi, sobbed, seeing the tombstone, called him the ugly example of socialist realism.

Vysotsky should not have found the last refuge on the main avenue. The authorities assigned him a place in the far corner. However, fate intervened in the person of the director of the Vagankovsky cemetery, a great admirer of Vladimir Semyonovich's creativity. It was he who singled out for the funeral an empty place at the entrance, where the singer rests to this day.

Modesty and brevity distinguishes the tombstone of another great bard. Bulat Okudzhava is also buried in the Vagankovskoye cemetery. A tombstone in the form of a large boulder with an intricately made inscription - the name of the singer and composer. This gravestone can rightfully be considered the most magnificent example of artistic minimalism.

One of the few graves, to this day littered with flowers, belongs to Igor Talkov. Another idol of millions, tragically killed at a young age. And his death is wrapped in secrets, rumors and legends, like many of his predecessors, who were buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery. The photo of the singer in a frame with a wooden carved pediment resembling a Russian hut is almost always framed with garlands of carnations and roses. The gravestone itself is decorated in neo-pagan Slavic style. On the black pedestal there is a huge cross made of bronze, the surface of which is decorated with the Cyrillic ligature, and at the base of the plinth of the gilded the famous lines "And defeated in battle, I will rise and I will sing ...".

Igor Talkov's grave, as well as the grave of Sergei Esenin, was not without suicide attempts. Fortunately, in this case, suicide was able to prevent and save the restless fanatics.

Who are they, saints buried in the Vagankovskoye cemetery?

There are special graves on this huge necropolis. Near them is always crowded, come here from afar with prayers and requests for help. One of these graves belongs to Father Valentine. Although officially he was not ranked as a saint, people sincerely believe in his intercession and consider the grave miraculous.

Father Valentin during his lifetime was known for his good temper, open generous heart. Poor and orphans, widows and homeless people turned to him for help. The priest took a sincere part in the fate of all those who sought protection and support from him.

It is noteworthy that the exact place of burial of Father Valentine is unknown. The priest died in 1908, and in the stormy 20th his grave was to be destroyed in order to end the pilgrimage. In 1941, having dug up the alleged burial site, no remains were found. It is believed that, fulfilling the will of his father Valentine, he was buried two meters deeper than it was customary to bury the deceased.

Today, on the supposed site of the repose of the Holy Father, there are two crosses, literally one meter apart. White, stone, set the great-granddaughter of the priest, the second, wooden, erected by pilgrims. From somewhere the belief has gone that it is here, aside from the official grave, that the remains of Father Valentine are resting. Both crosses have flowers, candles are always on the line from those who pray for help and thank for intercession.
