Only in the last century the planet lost 130 species of birds.

For many species, and Russia is a haven, a habitat, among them there are also quite rare. One of them is a black crane.

This bird is so rare that ornithologists could not describe it for a long time, since it was almost impossible to find it. Until 1974, the black crane was considered almost a myth. Ornithologist Pukinsky in 1974 first discovered on the Russian territory a nest of this species of birds. After certain observations, he was able to describe it.

Today this species is relatively well studied, but it is also included in the Red Book of Russia, and in the International Book.

Description

Crane black - a bird from a squad of cranes. Its body dimensions in length reach 90-100 centimeters, in height - 150 cm, and weight - about 4 kg. The body is rather dense and large, the head is small. Relatively long neck has, like many similar birds, an "S" -shaped shape. Strong, medium length beak on the end slightly curved.

The Black Crane has thin, rather long, but strong legs. The long tail due to the covering feathers is quite magnificent. Plumage of the body is thick and dense. The main body of the crane is covered with dark ash and blue-gray feathers. Feathers are flapping and tail feathers painted in black. Almost the entire head and neck are covered with white feathers. The unperfected head is colored in a bright red color. At the very base the beak has a pinkish color, and at the end it is greenish. The legs of the crane are black-brown.

Dimorphism sexual is practically not expressed. Female cranes from males are almost not different, only in size they are slightly smaller.

It should be noted that among all existing cranes, black is the smallest.

Where does the black crane live?

Primarily the habitat of these birds is the territory of the Russian Federation (Siberia). A slightly smaller number lives in China (north) and on the Korean peninsula. These birds prefer swampy sparse deciduous forests or swamps, on the shores of which there are thickets of cotton grass and various sedges.

In total, according to scientific research, there are approximately 9,000 individuals of this species in the world. Their favorite places are hard-to-reach marshy lowlands of the taiga zone. The Black Crane is a migratory bird, and it hibernates in Japan (most birds), in Korea and China.

The nesting area of the crane is not well studied. It is known that it is associated mainly with taiga larch.

Lifestyle, behavior, nutrition

Moving the black crane absolutely noiselessly, alternately, smoothly and highly raising his feet, slowly and carefully immersing them in the swamp of the swamp. At the same time, the bird's head is slightly inclined downward, and the body is always in a horizontal position.

The couple makes a beautiful marriage ritual dance before mating. Birds jump, throwing up the bunches of moss. The male at the same time makes cries, and the female repeats them twice.

In the spring, nesting takes place, for which the cranes choose a marshy area surrounded by forest. Basically, these are deaf, unaffected by human activity sites. Nests are built from various pieces of moist peat, moss, birch and larch twigs. Usually the female lays no more than 2 eggs, reminiscent of the eggs of domestic geese. They nasizhivayutsya about 30 days. Parents equally care about their offspring. Wings of chicks are formed on the 70th day.

The basis of the diet are water plants, berries, grains, insects with their larvae, small rodents, frogs and salamanders. Basically, food is picked up from the ground.
