What is an aphorism? Definition of the term and vivid examples

Many people use this word in everyday life. However, not everyone understands to the very end what it means. What is an aphorism? How does it differ from utterances, quotations, etc.? It is necessary to understand this.

Origin of the term

So, before we consider what an aphorism is, I would like to say a few words about the origin of this term. This is a Greek word, in translation it means nothing more than a "definition". Aphorism is a complete thought, differing in any originality. The main genre feature is laconic and that such phrases are easily remembered. And they have a deep meaning in them. What is the best example?

Let's say the following expression: "Why do you usually hit the back in the back with those you protect with your breasts?". Such a phrase is really remembered easily, and yet it makes you think and develop the idea stated in the aphorism. For the most part, the latter was achieved due to the interrogative nature of the proposal. Although the stated essence plays a certain important role here.

Quotes and aphorisms - what are their differences?

Many people confuse these concepts. Although, I must say, it's almost the same thing. But there are some differences. In order not to be mistaken, their definitions must be clearly remembered. So, the quotation is a verbatim thought. It can be a phrase written out from a book, a poem or any other literary work. Quotations are often taken from films, literally removing them from the lips of the main characters. Sometimes they are discharged from songs. In general, the quotation is a verbatim text extract. And what is an aphorism? This is the term of a finished thought, the most accurate and concise expression.

But what are the differences? For the most part - in volume. A quote can consist of one sentence or several paragraphs. But the aphorisms (most of them - about 70%) are just a few words. This is their peculiar zest. More aphorisms appear more often in the context of any works. They can be artistic, philosophical, even scientific. Of course, there are author's aphorisms. Take, for example, the winged expression "stupid of the brawlers both." It belongs to IA. Krylov - the great fabulist.

Or the phrase: "Everyone hears only what he understands." Goethe is a great thinker who is the author of this aphorism, which every person is capable of nudging thinking. It is interesting that many similar statements have a continuation. Only here every person thinks out independently.

Vivid examples

Speaking of what an aphorism is, one can not do without vivid examples. Perhaps, Faina Ranevskaya is one of the most extravagant personalities that owns really interesting and original statements. This is an incredible woman who spoke amazing things, often without hesitation of strong words. It's not for nothing that her aphorisms and statements are so popular, several years ago there was even published a book with her "sharpest" expressions. Well, some of them should be cited as an example.

"If the patient really wants to live, doctors are powerless", "Optimism is a lack of information" - Faina Ranevskaya could please people with both ridiculous statements and phrases that made you think and even rethink something. Her aphorisms about life are especially good, because she spoke what she thought. This quality has always been rare, and that's why - so valuable.

Thoughts of great

Famous poets, writers and thinkers are also the authors of many winged expressions and aphorisms. Everyone known Anton Pavlovich Chekhov said such a phrase, which at least once, but every person in his life said: "Brevity is the sister of talent". Three simple words, but how much sense they make! And everything is clear - there's nothing to think about. This phrase is a confirmation of another aphorism of Anton Pavlovich. He said that one should be afraid of an exquisite language.

The master of beautiful expressions was another great Russian poet - Sergei Yesenin. He said one good phrase: "He who loved, can not love, who burned, you can not set it on fire." Esenin was able to competently pick up comparisons and use them in his speech. This is how many of his statements were born, which became winged expressions.

Despite the fact that Sergei Alexandrovich was very young, he spoke words that aroused in the person certain thoughts. "We need to live more easily, we need to live more simply, taking everything that is in the world" is also his expression. Few people quote it verbatim, but this phrase is vital for everyone. Everyone understands what Sergei Aleksandrovich wanted to say.

Recognized authors

Surprisingly, there are people who were really recognized as authors of aphorisms. These include the Sakya Pandita, a Tibetan scholar of the Middle Ages, Shota Rustaveli, a poet and statesman of the distant 12th century, Juan Manuel, a Spanish writer, Francois de La Rochefoucauld, the author of a collection of aphorisms. But this is not the whole list. Friedrich Nietzsche, Mikhail Turovsky, Faina Ranevskaya, Alexander Woolcott, Bernard Shaw - these and many other great personalities are also the authors of the aphorisms that are very popular today, and are unlikely to ever go into oblivion.
