What features distinguished the Russian painting of the XX century?

In the twentieth century, a moment came when all art turned to the avant-garde. And if you ask what features distinguished Russian painting of that period from that in other countries, then we can say with certainty: all the artists were carried away by avant-garde, which in French means "advanced detachment".

History knows many examples of how, at the most crucial moments, when a change of epoch comes, creative individuals begin to create radical movements designed to consider events under a different prism. However, the 20th century has become a landmark event in this regard.

The Beginning

The first steps of the representatives of Russian avant-garde are in 1907, when the artistic association "Blue Rose" was created, where the recognized masters of neo-primitivism and symbolism gathered. These artistic styles paved the bridge to a fundamentally new direction in art - the avant-garde. The first bright artistic representatives of this trend were Kazimir Malevich, Larionov and Goncharov, whose works are kept in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

What features distinguished the Russian painting of the XX century? It was here that the term "avant-garde" first appeared - it was presented to the world by Benoit, ironically describing the works of artists from the creative association "Jack of Diamonds", who in 1910 presented the first innovative pictures from the technical point of view at the exhibition of the Union of Artists. Since then, it has become accepted that all novelties in this field belong to the Russian masters of the brush.

Representatives of the Russian avant-garde

Features of Russian painting of the 20th century. Are such that the vanguard that was born was a vast concept, while on its basis new and new stylistic trends were born. For example, many Russian artists in their work pursued the traditions of European modernism: Cubism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Rayonism, Fauvism and Futurism. The brightest representatives of the national avant-garde trend were Kandinsky and Malevich. They stood at the origins of this multifaceted artistic phenomenon and became the "culprits" for the birth of his offspring - abstract art.

Abstract art is a non-objective art, where an artist for an image uses only his own associative perception of reality, bypassing the canons of classical painting. The main artistic element of style is the color that helps artists to give canvas with emotions.

The first one who ventured on such an experiment was Kandinsky. His global idea was to convey to humanity that the canvas can represent music, that it owns its own color and has a separate form.

From abstract art to suprematism

Russian painting underwent active changes throughout the early 20th century. After Kandinsky first presented the first abstract work for the first time in 1909, his acquaintance with Kazimir Malevich occurred, although he was a great admirer of everything new, but nevertheless continued to be influenced by impressionism. From this moment the artist's works begin to undergo metamorphoses, which by 1913 showed him as a representative of cubo-futurism.

Over time, Malevich once again pointed out what features distinguished the Russian painting of the XX century - he became the founder of a new stylistic trend, known as Suprematism. A distinctive feature of this direction was that rectangular figures were put in the composition of the work. In fact, Suprematism is another type of abstract art, since it has similar features:

  • Pointlessness;
  • Lack of volume;
  • Geometricity (there can be any non - removable geometric shapes, but the central part of the picture is a rectangle);
  • asymmetry.

Malevich believed that Suprematism is a new plane of art that is accessible to an understanding of a new type of artists who managed to survive the prejudices of the past. What features distinguished the Russian painting in those days? In the opinion of representatives of Suprematism, this is an opportunity to comprehend the highest level of art, to learn the dynamics and the static of space by minimizing space.
