In the weapons-grade track record of the USSR, there are few samples made according to an unusual scheme. To such, it is possible to carry the weapon specially developed for the needs of special forces. This sniper rifle IED AS. It is almost the only one of its kind. However, we can not say that it turned out unsuccessfully. In any case, it is worth to find out what this rifle has won the confidence in the troops and how it stands out among others.

History of development

After the introduction of the standard rifle for sniper detachment SVD, soon found out that a long length is not always convenient in the conduct of combat. In addition, long arms can not always be comfortably transported. For example, in the limited space of a BMP or an airplane, only inconveniences will arise. When landing with a parachute, the VDD was dropped in the container at all in order to avoid injury to the shooter.

Since the troops were happy with the accuracy and reliability of the SVD, but still needed more convenient and compact weapons, in 1977 a competition was launched to improve the SVD. One of the priorities that were put before the designers was to reduce the length in the marching position. One of the original solutions was proposed by the designers of the Izhevsk machine-building plant. They supplied the SVD with a folding butt. This modification was called SVD-S. Thus, the problem was partially solved, and if the transportation of the weapon became comfortable, then the length of the battle still remained unchanged. To finally achieve the desired results, the designer LV Bondarev proposed an original solution - to perform the same SVD in the "bullpup" scheme. The final form of the rifle was in 1979, when the first samples were made, the weapon was called SVU (sniper rifle shortened). Then there was a period of protracted tests that were conducted in the Tula Airborne Division, and their rifle was successfully passed, but the leadership was morally not ready to use such unusual weapons. Moreover, the rifle was criticized, pointed only to shortcomings without mentioning the merits of weapons. Really seriously, the rifle began to be used only since 1991, and then only when the special unit Vympel insisted on mass production. First, all the rifles were made by reworking the available in the warehouse SVD.

The first global modernization of the rifle occurred in 1993. Then it was added the possibility of conducting automatic fire and the name was added to the letter A. Even later, in 1995, at the insistence of the veterans of the war in Chechnya, which, by the way, the IED went honorably, conducted a second modernization. Now the bipod was added to its design and the letter C was added to the name. In both cases, the shock-trigger mechanism had to be redesigned, and especially the modern implementation of switching fire modes. Depending on the strength of the trigger, the weapon fired either single shots or bursts. This scheme is now used in many samples.

Currently

Now the IED is a rifle, which is produced in small batches exclusively for the needs of the special forces of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. In total, no more than 10 thousand weapons are produced, which makes it quite rare. This rifle is equipped exclusively with assault teams of special forces. It should be mentioned that the tasks that are put before the IED AU can easily be carried out with the SVD-S rifle, so there is no particular difference in use. It can be noted that the IED is not exported, as it is a special-purpose weapon, that is, except for Russia, there is nowhere else to find a rifle.

Design Features

Since the IED AS is a rifle made according to the "bullpup" scheme, the take-up throat for the magazine and the trigger are located behind the trigger hook. This scheme allowed to reduce the total length of the weapon from 1225 mm (length of the SVD) to an acceptable one - 900 mm. In this case, the length of the barrel was reduced by 100 mm without sacrificing combat and operational characteristics. In general, many noted the similarity of the rifle with another successful example of the Second World War - the weapon of the German paratroopers FG-42.

Automation work

IED is a rifle that uses the principle of gas removal from the barrel channel in the basis of the automation operation. This system, the designer SVD - Dragoons, borrowed from the AK machine, although it is known that Kalashnikov did not participate in the development of the rifle.

In general, almost the whole design was taken from the rifle-parent - SVD, and this is the details of the USM, the locking system, the receiver, the automation. In addition, the rifle allows the shooter to fire in automatic mode. This is caused by an increase in the length of the course of descent. However, a sniper rifle that shoots like an automaton is a very controversial weapon, since fire control in automatic mode should be a very difficult task. Yes, and the cartridge used is quite powerful, which can lead to the destruction of the rifle assemblies. When cocking the trigger, the trigger pull and the sear are not disconnected, which causes a shot at the self-timer, after the bolt returns to the forward position and the barrel bore is locked. In addition, the design of the rifle includes a special translator, which limits the movement of the trigger.

Trunk

The trunk of the IED is much more massive than that of the SVD. At its manufacturing high-precision equipment is used. The barrel channel contains 4 cuts (right-handed), with a pitch of 320 mm. On its muzzle, a special device is attached, which performs a variety of functions - a muzzle brake-compensator, a flame arrester, a weight that reduces the kickback and swings of the barrel, and also shifts the center of gravity of the arms forward. In addition, the device circulates gases in the barrel in such a way that the volume of the shot is reduced to about 150 dB.

Information also suggests that I was releasing IEDs and a standard SVD stack, which should have a positive effect on accuracy, but there is no evidence of it.

Headset

The pistol grip is made of impact-resistant plastic and is near the center of gravity of the rifle. For the convenience of conducting fire, for example, in winter, the trigger guard was increased specifically for the gloved hand. Also, for the sake of convenience, a special "cheek" is attached to the receiver to support the head. Some changes have touched both the trunk lining and forearm. They, although they were taken from the SVD, but in connection with the movement of the sight forward have been redone.
The rear part of the receiver performs the function of the butt. For this purpose, a special springplate of the spring-loaded type is attached to it. He, like the forearm, the projection of the "cheek" and the lining is made of polyamide. As the center of gravity of the rifle changed - now it is near the fire control handle, this shifted the rifle balance to the positive side. To hold arms more comfortably than the same SVD.
Bipods intended for firing from the prone position can be rotated by means of a hinged attachment and a special rod that is fixed firmly in front of the receiver. Rotation around its axis is possible both to the right and to the left by about 90 degrees. The bipod itself is a telescopic type, four altitude adjustment modes are allowed, the maximum height is 320 mm.

Food and ammunition

In the quality of the cartridge sniper rifle IED uses both regular ammunition 7.62 mm, and special sniper ammunition 7,62х54 R.
The rifle shop holds 10 to 30 cartridges. It can be both a regular store for VDS, and a newer 20-charge sample. There was also information about the development of 30-charging stores, but they were not confirmed.

Sights

SVU AS is a rifle, on which a PSO-1 sight is installed according to the standard. But, depending on the combat situation on the rifle, you can also install night variants - NSPU and the like. As for the mechanical sighting devices, the designers abandoned the standard sector sights, as in the SVD and made a dioptric sight with an adjustable diopter. The diopter and fly are mounted on the folding racks, which increases the reliability and keeps the sight from damage. You can shoot with a mechanical sight without removing the optics.

The rifle has a satisfactory accuracy of shooting - at a range of 100 m the spread is not more than 70 mm.

As an airsoft or hunting weapon, a rifle is not common. IED - rifle, airsoft with which expensive pleasure. Despite this, its appearance is borrowed in the manufacture of airsoft variants. And there can be no question of free sale in the civilian market, because the spetsnaz weapons are almost a secret, this also applies to IEDs.
