UAZ, gearbox: maintenance

The car consists of many units and assemblies. Transmission is one of the most important components in the design of the car. Like any other node, it needs regular maintenance. Today we will consider how the gearbox (UAZ "Patriot" including) is serviced on the cars of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant.

What is this node for? The task that the gearbox performs on the UAZ car is a change in the traction force of the drive wheels (which can be four on a full drive) by engaging different gears. The latter have a different number of teeth. One of them works on the reverse - that is, moves the car backwards.

Service Highlights

During the operation of the UAZ car, the transmission must undergo a regular inspection. The first thing you should pay attention to is the oil leakage. When grease is flowing from under the machine during parking, and when there are characteristic noises and howling, it is necessary to immediately check the level of the liquid residue in the system. If this is a new transmission (UAZ), the oil in it changes immediately after running-in. Usually it is 2-3 thousand kilometers.

How to do it?

First, unscrew the plug from the hole. It is worth noting that there are several of them. The first, located in the middle of the box, is on the bay, and the one that is below - on the drain of the liquid. It is unscrewed, as on most domestic cars, with the help of a hexagonal key. Before this, you should prepare a container in advance, where the old oil will be drained. It can be made from an old canister, cutting off its lateral part. After draining the fluid, the gearbox (UAZ "Bukhanka" is not an exception) undergoes a washing process.

Washing

To do this, you need 500-700 milliliters of "mineral water" (not to be confused with water - this is oil). Tighten the hole from the bottom and through the upper neck fill it into the transmission. Allow the car to idle for a while (4-5 minutes will be enough). Transmission gearwheels must be in neutral position. Then the engine is muffled, we put our canister and drain the oil, unscrewing the lower "hatch". Also remember that you can not drive on the washing oil , because of its low viscosity - this can lead to badass, and as a result, you are expected to repair the UAZ transmission.

How much to pour?

A new liquid must be poured until it begins to flow from the top "hatch" - this is a signal to the fact that the level is at the maximum mark. By the way, the rest of the liquid is checked by the same principle - with the help of a hexagonal key, unscrew the upper plug and look at the remainder with the probe. A stitch can even serve as a wooden twig or a long nail. The main thing is that the object is clean. If the oil is not enough, it is added (but not mixed with different brands). Usually UAZ uses "Lukoil" or its analog, consonant with the name, "Yukoil".

How often to check the level?

This operation should be repeated no less than once every ten thousand kilometers. As we said earlier, at the missing level it needs to be topped up. By the way, the level is checked only on the cooled transmission - so all the oil will drain into the crankcase.

More about the replacement

The instruction manual says that after running in a new car (this also applies to freshly repaired units), it is necessary to change the oil not only in the transmission, but also in the transfer case, as well as in the front and rear axles, since we have a four-wheel drive car. The volume of the rinsing "mineral water" should be at least 75 percent of the total in the unit, which is required by the manufacturer. Ideally - pour until it flows out.

Difficulties of the Gulf

Certainly UAZ owners faced the problem of impossibility of oil filling. For this you need to try hard. Fortunately, motorists share advice, and the procedure becomes much easier. Many drivers recommend for this use a long metal syringe with a curved, made of rubber, a spout. Its capacity should be at least 300 milliliters. Also note that the gearbox (UAZ 452) requires the use of viscous oil, so it will be difficult to fill it - it is necessary to "squirt" with effort. This is especially noticeable in the winter period. Then the gear oil turns into a jelly. To facilitate efforts, motorists recommend this "jelly" melt, I mean pre-heat. Fortunately, this is not gasoline, so nothing burns and explodes - you can safely hold the syringe over the gas comfort or the burner. If there is no such syringe, and the timing of replacement is tight, then you can use improvised methods. Owners of UAZ are rich in ideas, and each is inventing its own way for itself. For example, to fill the oil you can use a thin tube and a plastic bottle. The car is jacked up, and by tilting the bottle, oil is poured. It is important to achieve maximum tightness of the connection (meaning the place of contact of the end of the hose with the neck), otherwise the liquid will not pour into the transmission, but on the asphalt. The UAZ transmission will quickly fail. Others use a longer tube - extend it from the filler neck of the transmission through the hood. Put the funnel on the top of the hose. This method is simpler than a plastic bottle.

Analog of a metal syringe

Some use a disposable medical syringe for the bay. Choose a larger volume, since 10 ml can be poured until the evening. If there is no possibility to buy a large syringe, it is better to use the previous methods.

We carry out maintenance - down with the leak

We already said at the beginning of the article that the presence of a leak in an element such as a gearbox (UAZ "Patriot" including) is an unacceptable thing. But what if the transmission regularly "eats" butter? Daily add it to the desired level - not the best solution. It is necessary to make repairs - to do this visually determine the place of the swelling and the sealing to change. It can be a gasket or an oil seal. Repair is always accompanied by a dismantling box.

Why does the box "eat" butter?

There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it is the presence of road dust and dirt in the transmission oil. And as we know, UAZ is not bought for driving around the city - in 70 percent of cases they are prepared for a full offroad where they conquer fords and rivers. Mired in the mud UAZ (this, of course, a rarity, but even a full drive does not save from a deep swamp) easily "swallows" mud, sand and water. By the way, the presence of even 5 percent of water can simply kill the transmission. To prevent this, motorists install a cover on the UAZ transmission. It is able to protect the transmission from such factors.

We treat noise

On vehicles UAZ, the gearbox often howls, including the distributing gear. When the bridge is switched off, the synchronizers begin to "grunt", there are strange noises. Even after the checkpoint, these diseases do not disappear. By the way, it is the transmission lever that is some kind of "noise antenna" on UAZs - press it down with a hand a little, and the sounds disappear. Of course, to drive and constantly press the lever will not work (especially as it harms the resource). Therefore, many drivers advise installing the gearshift lever from GAZel. According to legend, the noise level disappears. This is one of the many advice of UAZ owners. By the way, the gearbox of UAZ and GAZel is almost identical. Therefore, the parts here are interchangeable (including the "noise antenna").

Transmission UAZ 469 - overhaul

The cost of the new box is about 30 thousand rubles, so many repair themselves. But first you need to check what went wrong. So, first of all look at the status of the shift fork.

Even if visually it is "like new", be sure to stir it from side to side. If it dangles on the rods, it must be tightened. Next, look at the wear gears gears. The greatest wear can be in the area of the coupling teeth. The gap between them should not exceed 1 millimeter (for diagnostics we use a special feeler gauge). If the gap is increased, the teeth will grasp only half - hence the interruptions in operation. Be sure to inspect the primary shaft and synchronizers. Guide tines should be without blunting and working out. Also, rust is unacceptable. Synchronizer and gears change entirely to new ones.

Then take out the synchronizer coupling and the hub. Externally inspect the lateral wear from the teeth of the primary shaft. The edges should be sharp - with blunted teeth will slip, so the transfer is very difficult to turn on. As for bearings, noise is not acceptable when rotating them, let alone play. These elements change in assembly for new ones. If during the operation the rear gear was turned on with difficulty and crunching, check the condition of the teeth on its gear. Very often, these details "zamyayet." Slots of the intermediate shaft should not be "beaten". Otherwise - replacement. If they are whole, only the bearing changes.
