Thuya West Smaragd: Care and Growth

Thuya is a western "Smaragd" - a unique beauty plant that can decorate any household plot. It perfectly ionizes and purifies the air. Thuju can be used as a hedge. Thuya western Smaragd is considered one of the best columnar tui, characterized by moderate growth. At the age of ten, it reaches six meters in height and one and a half wide. Thuya western Smaragd has a rather dense, narrow-conical crown. Branches of plants have a dark green color, which does not change even in winter.

Thuya is a colonial - quite demanding plant growing. In contrast, the western part of Smarag is unpretentious, but prefers fertile and moist soil. It is perfectly grown even in special containers. It grows both on alkaline soils and on acidic soils. Like all evergreen plants, it does not tolerate the drying of the soil.

Since this plant is characterized by intensive growth rates, unpretentiousness in care, attractive form, shade-resistance, frost-resistance, it is often used for landscaping of the territory.

Tui Planting

You need to prepare a seedling tuja, shovel, perlite, peat, water and "Evergreen" fertilizer. Then choose the most suitable place - sunny or partially darkened. The tree should be under direct sunlight for at least six hours a day. The soil must be moist, well drained. Perlite, peat and manure can be used to enrich it. For young plants, after irrigation and weeding, a shallow loosening is carried out to a depth of 10 centimeters.

Water the plant regularly (in dry weather - twice a week for 1-2 buckets), so that the ground in the base of the thuja is always wet. Frequent watering is especially important for young plants, which are trying to adapt and gain a foothold in a new place. For irrigation, you can use a watering can or a garden hose.

Thuya western Smaragd requires regular fertilization (April, May, August). To fertilize thuja, it is better to use specialized fertilizers, which are intended for evergreen plants. In the first year of tree growth, fertilizer should be diluted twice to avoid burning the hypersensitive root system of the plant. Further fertilizers are used in accordance with the instructions on the package. Western Thuya Smaragd needs timely circumcision of colorless, diseased or damaged branches.

Western Thuya: Reproduction

The plant reproduces by seeds and vegetatively (horizontal layers, division or cuttings). It should be noted that the second of them is preferable. At gardeners the most popular way of reproduction of thuja is cuttings. The best results are obtained in spring, when the buds of the tree have not yet awakened. Cuttings are planted in a warm bed, preferably with biopreheating. Gardeners do not recommend to implement cuttings after the appearance of the kidneys, because the root system does not have time to form and in the winter it freezes. If the reproduction of thuya is produced by division, then the young tree is first settled, after which it is divided into several plants. When propagating with horizontal branches, the branches bend to the ground and fall asleep, within a year the thuja takes root. The least popular way of reproduction is with seeds. In this case the seedling will grow up only after three to five years.

Pests and diseases of Thuya Smaragd

The main pests of this plant are aphids and falsification. They damage the needles of the tree, as a result of which it turns yellow and falls off. To destroy these parasites, insecticides are used, for example, carbofos (90 grams of the drug per 10 liters of water).
