Many theaters in Chelyabinsk today have musical performances in their repertoire. But the main one is the opera. Its construction began in 1937. It should have ended in 1941. But the war changed all plans. In the building instead of the theater there was a factory evacuated from Moscow, which manufactured ammunition for the front. As a result, the opera and ballet theater in the city was opened only in 1955. In the early 80's. He underwent restoration, thanks to which he became more majestic and beautiful. Today it is the pride of the city of Chelyabinsk.

Puppet Theatre

Some theaters in Chelyabinsk are designed primarily for children's audiences. The most popular among them is the puppet show. It is one of the oldest theaters not only in the Urals, but also in Russia. The first troupe was very small. She gave presentations from time to time and acted on other people's stage. Puppeteers received the status of a state theater in 1935. In the same year they were allocated a building in which the school was located before. In 1936, with the troupe, a studio was opened, where future actors-puppeteers studied.

During the war the building was given to the hospital. Most of the troupe went to the front. The remaining artists joined the staff of the propaganda teams.

In the 50-60's. The theater actively developed. At that time, it was located in a building where the mosque had been before. In 1959 the theater received the status of a regional theater.

In the 70-ies. A new era has begun. Artists began to work together with dolls without a screen - in a living way. In the repertoire there were performances for adults. In 1972, the troupe settled in a building along Kirov Street, where it is located today.

In the 90s, the actors took an active part in various festivals and competitions, often winning, becoming laureates or grand prix winners.

The name of Valery Volkhovsky was awarded to the theater in 2006. At the same time the collective became the organizer of the festival among puppeteers at the international level "Straw Lark".

Since 2008, returning to the troupe Alexander Borok becomes the main director. In 2010, the Chelyabinsk Puppet Theater celebrated its 75th anniversary. The international festival "The Ark" was timed to coincide with it. The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture of Russia.
