The Norwegian Forest Cat is a true pride of the whole Northern Europe. She is a character of numerous legends. So, if you believe the ancient myths, the ancestors of these cats were at the premium of Freyja - the goddess of love and fertility.

The very first mentions of these animals date back to the end of the 16th century, and more reliable descriptions (more precisely sketches) were sedans only in 1910. And only in the early 70s of the last century the Norwegian forest breed of cats was officially recognized as a separate breed.

As a result of numerous genetic studies it was found that Norwegians originated from a wild Middle Eastern cat, like all other breeds of domestic cats.

Appearance

The constitution of this breed is muscular, the bones of the skeleton are massive and durable. Despite its weight, these animals are extremely plastic, flexible and mobile.

The shape of the cat's head resembles an isosceles triangle. Large enough ears are adorned with charming shitiks and brushes, like a lynx. Large, wide-open eyes have a rounded shape. The color of the pads of the paws, eyes and nose is in harmony with the coloration of the animal.

One of the main distinctive features of the Norwegians is the presence of a two-layer "coat". In severe winters, the undercoat (the lower layer) becomes extremely thick and stiff, and by the spring it becomes much thinner. The long covering coat has a softer and shiny texture. It is noteworthy that it not only warms the cat from the cold, but also has waterproof properties

The most dense and dense undercoat is located on the neck and chest of the animal. He forms a beautiful collar, resembling a mane. The hind legs are also covered with thick wool, forming the so-called "pants".

The Norwegian forest cat has a fluffy and long tail, its length is almost equal to the length of the animal's body. The color of the individual's hair can be anything other than red-brown, chocolate, sable and lavender shade. In general, color plays a secondary role, the properties of the hair cover are considered much more valuable. So, dry hair is a significant drawback, as well as the round shape of the head, small ears, short tail and paws.

Development and care

At the earliest stage of development, the kittens of the Norwegians differ little from other cats. Changes in appearance begin to occur during puberty: the animal's body becomes more elongated, the size of the head increases and the ears planting changes. By the way, the Norwegian forest cat matures slowly enough: females - to three years, males - to 5. During full maturity the individual acquires a more impressive and attractive appearance.

Like all cats, Norwegian forest animals like to eat meat, fish and dairy products. They also do not neglect dry cat food. Especially gluttonous animals in the period of growth - eat 4-5 times a day. An adult, already formed pet is recommended to feed 2-3 times a day. Sterilized individuals prone to fatness, it is desirable to feed less often.

The Norwegian forest cat, being the owner of a smart long wool, is fully capable of caring for her alone. However, a caring owner can help his pet by combing it a couple of times a week. The animal will certainly appreciate the care and thank you with a quiet grunt, like a tweet.

Temperament

A noble and beautiful Norwegian forest cat character is appropriate: she is bold, sociable, playful, very much attached to a loving master.

The animal adequately tolerates a change of scenery, feels comfortable in the environment of a large number of people. These cats are recommended to start in families where there are children. Also Norwegians get along well with other pets, it is noteworthy that they get along well with dogs.

Despite the fact that the Norwegian forest is very patient, these creatures will not tolerate extremely cruel treatment. Incredible speed of movements and sharp claws will allow the cat not only to quickly hide from danger, but also in some cases properly and to teach the offender.
