The mystical world of Nikolai Gogol, or What asked to raise Viy?

It so happened that Nikolai Gogol is more known precisely because of one of his strangest and ambiguous works - the story "Viy". It can hardly be called the most successful example of the writer's work, but every second, without hesitation, will give the correct answer to the question: "What did Vii ask to raise?" And this proves if not the extreme popularity of the work, at least the recognition of one of his characters.

The story tells about the adventures of the Homa Brutus, who is experiencing a real horror. Once faced with evil forces, Homa can not be saved. The impression of the story is further strengthened if one knows the mystical stories about the writer's grave related to the missing skull and the scratched lid of the coffin. There is a suspicion that Gogol himself was somehow connected with evil forces. Perhaps Gogol received ideas for his works under a contract with a demon.

Should I read the story of Wii before going to bed?

Despite the archaic language and the abundance of stylistic means, the story is read in one breath. What Viy asked to raise, by itself will not be lowered when read by the reader - everything happens quite the contrary. Detailed descriptions of the attacks of evil forces on the hero, the disgusting appearance of the deceased witch a few days ago and the horrific rites described in the book will leave very few people indifferent. It will not be easy for a modern reader to adapt to the peculiar language of Nikolai Gogol, but this is more than compensated for by the imagery of the work. Even if the story does not frighten the sophisticated lovers of Edgar Poe, Howard Lovecraft or Stephen King, it still leaves an unpleasant residue.
