The Legendary Rock-Fisherman

The Rock-Fisherman is not a precious stone at all, as one might think, for this is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear this name for the first time. Moreover, it is not a stone at all, and to stones as such has a very distant relation. The name is an echo of the old fishing legend, which few people now remember.

What is the Rock-Fisherman?

Everything is much simpler, Kamen-Rybolov is a rather crowded village in Primorsky Krai, located on the shore of the picturesque Lake Khanka. There is a village not far from the border with China, so there are quite a few people from the neighboring country among the population.

The Rock-Fisherman is the largest and most populous village in the Russian Federation. According to the 2010 census, its population was more than 10,000 people. Here, a unique ecosystem is preserved, which is facilitated by the absence in the village itself and nearby any industrial enterprises.

The ecological situation of the region remains stably one of the best in Russia, and, perhaps, it is not a coincidence that the Far Eastern Scientific Research Institute dealing with plant protection is located here.

History of the village

The settlement was founded in the distant 1865, when a large group of Cossacks moved here from the western regions, searching for new grounds for fisheries in these deaf and impenetrable places.

The first inhabitants of the village, who founded the Kamen-Fishermen, Primorski Krai perceived as a quiet, secluded place where the traditions of the past and the patriarchal way of life were preserved. And their life proceeded as calmly and carefree: the Cossacks engaged in fishing in the waters of Lake Khanka, hunting in the dense forests surrounding the village, and selling furs to nearby China.

The shocks and worries of the outside world were bypassed. So, for its inhabitants, the events of the February and October revolutions that followed the fratricidal Civil War and the change in the political system were virtually invisible. Everything changed only in 1936, when the 47th Regiment of Fighter Aviation was formed in the village of Kamen-Rybolov, one of the first who entered the battle with the Japanese army on Lake Khasan in 1938.

The village in our days

Today it is a true nature reserve of the Kamen-Fisher. Photos of his surroundings give a clear idea of this. It became a real Mecca for tourists from neighboring China and the western regions of Russia.

They are primarily attracted by the undiminished virgin nature of these places, the stunning landscapes of Lake Khanka, the shy beauty of the Komisarovka River and the protected areas with already become unique plants and animals of the Far Eastern District.

Now here the tourist infrastructure is developing rapidly, recreation centers are opening, attracting visitors with comfortable rooms, excursion programs and any available entertainment. Thanks to this, after 150 years of existence, the Stone-Fishermen finally became part of this world, and not a deaf unknown village, lost among impenetrable forests.
