The largest cities in Ukraine by area, by population. Big cities of Ukraine: list

Ukraine is the country, the second in terms of territory among the states of Europe, located in its eastern part.

General demographic and geographic characteristics

The population is about 43 million. Within the whole of our planet this is the thirty-second place by the number of inhabitants among all other states. Countries such as Moldova and Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, Poland, Belarus and Russia are its neighbors.

In its southern part the territory is washed by the Black and Azov Seas. Basically the area is flat and places hilly, and only five percent are the mountains, the Carpathian (with the highest point of 2,061 meters - Goverla) and the Crimean (the highest point is Roman-Kosh, 1545 meters).

Briefly about the richness of natural resources

Of the one hundred and twenty kinds of minerals that are known to man and he uses them, 97 there are. Five percent of the world's reserves - just such a quantity of iron ore is concentrated in the lands of Ukraine. In addition, there are large deposits of coal, the world's largest deposits of sulfur, mercury ores (second place). A huge number of nonmetallic minerals widely used in the construction industry. It is clay, limestone, tuff, marble, basalt, gypsum, chalk, and marl. By reserves of sodium chloride, graphite, kaolin, Ukraine is among the world's leading countries and Europe in particular. And this is not the whole list of what the Ukrainian land is rich in.

Concentration of population

In the cities of Ukraine, which number 460, almost 69% of the population live. The remaining 31% falls on the population of rural settlements (urban-type settlements, the number is 885) and rural settlements, of which more than 28 thousand. In small settlements, the main occupation is the management of agriculture, which has all the favorable conditions for development and high productivity. This is the climatic conditions, and the quality of soils (in Ukraine there is a third of arable land throughout Europe). Only the attitude of some people towards agriculture is unfavorable.

The government pays little attention to this issue, the villagers do not have a special support, therefore, on an industrial scale, agriculture is partially developed, in the sowing industry - cereals, corn. Animal husbandry is mainly at the level of providing for one's own family. In cities, there is a concentration on different types of industry.

Cities that are the largest in their area

In terms of area among Ukrainian cities, Kiev is the first place, the capital, and its territory is 870.5 sq. Km.

The next five cities have about 400 km sq., They are Makeyevka (Donetsk region), Gorlovka (Donetsk region), Krivoy Rog (Dnepropetrovsk region), Dnepropetrovsk and Donetsk. Their area - 425.7 km square, 422 km square, 410 km square, 405 km square. And 385 km square. respectively. In addition to Kiev, Ukraine's largest cities have such a large area due to highly developed industrial activities. So, in Makeyevka there are about twenty factories and plants oriented to heavy industry (ferrous metallurgy, coal mining, machine building) and food enterprises. Together with Donetsk, these two cities are the largest hub of industry in Ukraine. In Gorlovka there are more than fifty different chemical, coal, food, machine-building and processing industries. Krivoy Rog is the center of the most important raw material base of metallurgy. Dnepropetrovsk with its 200 enterprises in thirteen industries produces 4.5% of Ukraine's total industrial output. As for Kiev, it is a center not only for industry, but also for other issues, such as politics, culture, science, transport, religion.

The ten largest Ukrainian cities in terms of area are: in the seventh place - Kharkov (350 km sq.), The eighth place for Zaporozhye (331 sq. Km.), The ninth - Lugansk (269 sq. Km.), And concludes the top ten Nikolaev (253 sq. Km.).

The largest cities in Ukraine by population are again headed by Kiev - almost 2.9 million people, according to the latest data. The next, having half the value from the previous one, is Kharkov - 1.45 million people, then - Odessa (1.014 million), Dnepropetrovsk (987 thousand), and the fifth closest to the self-proclaimed Dnepropetrovsk capital Donetsk - with the population of 933 Thousands of people. The number of large cities of Ukraine, and these are those with 250-500 thousand people (16 of them), makes up about 5 million people, which is more than 11% of the total number of inhabitants of the country.

In general, the ten, which make up the largest cities of Ukraine, looks like this.

The population of small towns

The places with the least population are tragically known Pripyat (in this city no one lives now due to close proximity to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant) and Chernobyl, where approximately 500 people reside in shifts. They are responsible for ensuring security in the area, for working at the sites of the exclusion zone, as well as people who have decided to return to their hometown, despite the risk and danger.

Next come the small towns, where the population reaches values of about two to five thousand people. It:

- Berestechko and Ustilug in the Volyn region.

- Baturin in the Chernigov region.

- Skalat in the Ternopil region.

- Svyatogorsk in the Donetsk region.

Although the legislation of Ukraine to assign the status of the city can be a village with a population of ten thousand. But in a country with such a rich history there is a place for exceptions based on the historical significance of cities. Also, cities remain those settlements that previously had a number of residents above the required minimum, but over time the number fell due to the mortality rate and migration of residents to other cities and countries.

Rating in the world

Ukraine is in second place in terms of mortality in the world. Only South Africa is ahead of her in this sad rating. At a time when the average death rate in the world is 8.6 per thousand people, in Ukraine it is actually twice as high - 15.72 (data for 2014). For comparison, in Iraq, where the unstable political situation is in places, now and then there are tragic events with the use of weapons, the death rate is only 4.57. What is the basis of the problems of the population of the Ukrainian state?

The problems of high mortality

Mainly, it is ecology, or rather, disregard for environmental norms. So, first of all, pollution of water resources. According to the level of water treatment that residents of Ukraine consume, the country is 105th out of 120. The norms used to determine the suitability for drinking water consumption have been developed even during the USSR. Since then, "a lot of water has flowed under the bridge," many new, harmful substances have appeared, which are not monitored by obsolete standards.

The second important reason is the lack of recycling: only 10% are recycled, the rest - is added and burned, which is partly a component of air pollution. For comparison: in Europe, up to 95% of garbage is recycled. For example, cans of aluminum, in which Coca-Cola or Sprite drinks are sold. 99% go into re-production, because aluminum is completely processed, and all with a five percent cost of energy of primary production. And, of course, the problem of Chernobyl, which affected not only the Ukrainian lands, but also the neighboring countries of Western Europe, as well as the Russian regions nearest to the border . But if the consequences of the aforementioned catastrophe can not actually be corrected anything, the remaining problems can be completely solved, the main thing is to exert efforts. Continuation of this attitude to the external environment will soon lead to a critical decline in the population of Ukraine.
