The Botanical Garden of SFedU: how to get, reviews

Botanical Garden SFU (abbreviation stands for Southern Federal University) is located in Rostov-on-Don and has been operating for more than 80 years. During this time, many plants were preserved, new specimens were planted, rarely found in the steppe zone. The staff conducts active research and educational activities.

History of creation

Botanical Garden SFU (Rostov-on-Don) could be laid as far back as 1915, when the University was evacuated from the University of Warsaw. But the First World War was replaced by the Revolution, and the idea was realized only after the stabilization of the situation in the region. With the initiative to create the Botanical Garden, scientists from the local university made speeches to the authorities, received approval and a land plot of 74.11 hectares near the river Temernik.

The increase in the garden area to 259 hectares occurred in 1933, the flower gardens of the former private farm of the Ramm brothers, who were of Dutch origin, were given up for planting. The received territory was a well-established farm, there were squares for the pasture of early flowers for Easter or Christmas, there were greenhouses, greenhouses operated and open areas for seasonal plants.

The active commercial activity of the brothers was supported by catalogs, mailing of planting and seed material, which was grown on a farm or discharged from abroad. Botanical Garden SFU inherited almost all the achievements and material values of the Ramm brothers.

Landscaping

The first director of the Botanical Garden was Professor VN Vershkovsky. With his participation, the design of the territory began, where the greater part was given to the park zone. The plan indicated that the park in miniature will reflect the map of the North Caucasus with the corresponding plants characteristic for each locality. But it was not possible to realize the idea, because almost all the imported landings were lost due to improper conditions of the steppe zone.

The exposition part was occupied by IE Chugunov. He divided all the work into several stages. Originally, a park of forest type (30 hectares) and an arboretum (4.2 hectares) were laid on four different slopes. In the same period the nursery of wood-ornamental plants is laid, its area occupied 15 hectares. In the pre-war years, the garden managed to collect more than four hundred species of rare plants for the region. During the war, most of the collection was lost.

Now 54 species are in good condition from the first planted plants. For example, a rare specimen of large oak oak, Amur velvet and many others are well behaved. The Botanical Garden of SFU carefully preserves one of the oldest trees in its collection - a petioled oak, whose age is estimated at 120 years.

War and the post-war years

At the end of 1928, the garden received the status of a research institution and was transferred to the North Caucasus University, at present it is the Southern Federal University, from where the modern name was formed. Fundamentals of work and priorities of activities were laid in the pre-war period. In addition to scientific activities, it conducts educational work among the population, the cultivation of valuable plants, conservation of existing species of flora and others.

During the Great Patriotic War the city fell into occupation. Most of the garden collections were lost, greenhouses and open flower gardens were destroyed, many plant species were lost. Residential houses, outbuildings, office space also suffered from military operations. The library, laboratories were plundered, valuable records, research materials and archival manuscripts were lost.

The Botanical Garden of SFedU started rehabilitating almost immediately after the victory. In 1953 a collection of thermophilic exotic plants of the tropics and subtropics zone, planted in a greenhouse, appeared. Further development continued in the 60s. During this period, plots with collections of ornamental plants for the garden, medicinal plants were laid. In the 80s, on the territory of the garden were planted essential oil, fodder species of flora and endangered plants of the steppe zone.
