Studying in a primary school a word with two roots

Most programs in the Russian language, for which primary school teachers work, contain in the third grade a topic such as the study of a word with two roots. Of course, there are such words even earlier, but usually this does not focus attention until a detailed study of the methods of word formation begins . And not so many hours are devoted to this topic, and it is very important to explain it to the children and to consolidate their knowledge on it. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to a few of the most important points.

Before studying this topic, it is necessary to firmly consolidate the knowledge of morphology and word formation among schoolchildren, including the methods of word formation that are already familiar to them (prefix, suffix and prefix-suffix). If there are no problems with this, and knowledge is successfully applied in practical activity, a new method of formation is introduced, the addition of bases, which results in compound words with two roots.

In the Russian language there are not so many, but they are, and children should be able to write them correctly. The main difficulty is caused by connecting vowels, in which, most often, spelling errors are allowed . Most often, teachers explain that there are two connecting vowels E and O, which in its way is true. Usually in the textbooks for primary school, exercises with words such as snowfall, cinema and others are selected, where the roots are connected by these vowels. However, it is often forgotten, and sometimes it is done intentionally, to say that some words with two roots do not have a connecting vowel. For example, a word like the "five-year plan" can cause difficulties for children in writing, since in the second syllable is written I, and not the usual connecting E. In high school students are necessarily introduced to such examples, and also by writing complex words through hyphen. However, schoolchildren may be puzzled, because the first teacher often told them and forced them to remember that in complex words only O or E are written in compound words

Therefore, it is better to specify such moments at once when explaining the topic in the third grade, while not particularly focusing on them while attention, but more studying the words with two roots, examples of which are given in textbooks (most often they are the same type, such as a snowmobile , Scooter, etc.).

It is necessary to draw the children's attention to the semantic load of the roots, and also what these words are for. This is necessary to ensure that students can understand that not all long words necessarily have two roots. For example, the words "potato" or "tomato" have one root, and their spelling is associated with very different orthograms. So, it's better to choose words with two roots (at least until the children understand the topic well) as easily as possible, and also often found in their everyday life. It is better to start with nouns, gradually getting acquainted with complex adjectives (Great Russian, etc.) and other parts of speech.

It is important to remember that it is much better for children of this age to learn the material in practice, so the theory should be at a minimum, and it is better if, in explaining, let the children themselves make a conclusion about the formation of such words, and their meaning.

For practical exercises, you can use the following tasks. The child is given the task to independently compose several such words, as well as highlight the roots in them. Students are given several parts of complex words in an arbitrary order, which they must correctly connect with each other. Children should explain the spelling of a vowel in words: a steamer, a chimney, a locomotive and others.

It should be noted that words with two roots are often found in the everyday life of schoolchildren, so it is important to be able to write them correctly, because a correctly written dictation or statement is the best praise to the teacher, and also thanks to the pupil's parents.
