No plant has so many fictions as the queen of flowers. Legends of roses exist in every country, and all of them are associated with the first appearance of this flower in a particular state. But the truth remains the fact of the existence of a fragrant plant more than 25 million years on earth. In cultural cultivation, the prickly beauty is more than five thousand years old. The petals of red, yellow, apricot, peach and even black are a unique celebration of the past and the present.

History

This flower was worshiped and sung from time immemorial. Archaeologists have obtained information about the existence of a rose on the Cretan peninsula, where frescos with this symbol are found. Also, wreaths of roses were found in Egyptian tombs and silver coins minted in the 4th century BC. E.

Legends of roses connect the first appearance of the flower with the gift of Allah to the Persians. In fact, the Chinese put themselves at the source of the appearance of this fragrant plant. Although some sources still argue that the official site for the removal of the queen of flowers from rose hips is Persia.

Whatever legends and beliefs about the rose, but the most ancient plant variety is the damask shrub which was brought to Europe from Syria in 1875. The best specialists in the cultivation of these plants are called French, and the leaders of the delivery of flowers of love are the Dutch. The center for the production of rose oil, widely used in perfumery, is Bulgaria.

Known to mankind the advantages of a prickly beauty give rise to a bunch of legends attributing the appearance of a flower to its people.

Myths about the origin

A white rose appeared as an offering of Allah to his people. The children of the flora asked the creator to change the Lotus that does not cope with the king's duties. The majestic beauty was immediately called the queen of flowers. So there was a legend about the rose - "Flower for children".

In India there is a myth about the appearance of the goddess of abundance and beautiful Lakshmi from the rosebud. But while in iconography, the loving mother of the Hindu Universe appears before them against the background of the lotus. Perhaps the admirers of the genus Rosehip pushed the significance of the lotus in the Eastern religion to the background, attributing the services to the prickly princess.

The Greeks correlated the appearance of an impressive flower with the goddess of love. According to ancient Greek culture, the rose arose from the foam on the body of Aphrodite, when she emerged from the sea. It was she who presented the beauty of the flower, and Dionysus satiated the rose with a heady aroma, filling the plant with nectar.

The appearance of a red flower

After Aphrodite became the cause of the appearance of the white rose, she decorated these flowers with her altar and garden. The petals of the plant remained "clean" until the sad news. When the news arrived about the wounding of the beloved Adonis, the goddess immediately rushed to him through the rose garden. Running in frustrated feelings, Aphrodite did not notice that the thorns of the plant were scratching her bare legs, and drops of divine blood dripped onto the white petals of the flower. So there was a plant of a scarlet shade. Here is such a short legend about the rose red is present in ancient Greek mythology.

In general, the Greeks adorned the wedding bed with pink petals, showered them with a road through which the victors returned from the war, dressed up brides in wreaths of these flowers with myrtle.

In Rome, the plant was a symbol of courage. Warriors were given courage before sending them to fighting clashes: instead of a helmet a wreath of roses was worn.

Emblem of England

More than thirty years in England continued the struggle between the two dynasties: York and Lancaster. This conflict brought the kingdom destruction and loss from the feudal aristocracy. Henry Tudor, a representative of the Lancaster House, won the conflict. The winning dynasty rules then England for the next 117 years.

But how are the legends about roses connected with the mentioned military conflict of 1455-1485? It turns out that later the disagreement between the dynasties of Lancaster and York was called "The War of the Scarlet and White Rose." The reason for this was the symbols of the warring forces. So, the white flower was chosen as the emblem of the loser, as it later became known, the Yorkie party. The scarlet rose became a contrasting opposition to the symbol of the enemy. They say that the British breeders even brought out a Lancaster York bush, on which both white and red flowers grow.

Halfpete

Legends of black roses are associated with the Turkish city of Halfet, thanks to him they received the identical name. The flower does not differ from the classical rose in any way, the only sign of uniqueness is the alarming coal-black shade of the petals.

The unnatural color of the plant was due to the composition of the soil on which it grows. This is the level of acidity that rises during the summer, just at the time of the flowering of the Halfet.

Black roses began to be attributed to an endangered species after the flooding of the old Halfet by the waters of the Euphrates. Residents began to transplant flowers to a new place, where they had to move in connection with the flood, but the adaptation of the bush was difficult.

Flower growers agree that it is impossible to achieve a black shade of rose petals by a natural way, since they lack a blue pigment. The kind of bush Khalfeti is a way of attracting tourists. In fact, the darkest rose has a burgundy-violet hue.

French legend

There is a sad legend, narrating about the sick girl leukemia Joelle. She lived in the twentieth century in France and was very fond of communicating with roses. The disease overcame the young Joelle at the age of 10 years. A few days before her death, she, talking with her mother, said that if she dies, she wants to become a rose that will belong to her parents.

Poor mother Joel did not ignore the last wish of the baby and after the death of the little girl turned to the French rose breeders with a request to bring out a new flower and name it after her girl. A new variety was distributed and put on the market, and money from sales was sent to fight cancer.

Perhaps, the told story of the rose for children with leukemia, is a myth, but still want to believe it. Believe that a beautiful plant saves not only the hearts broken by love, but also helps to bring back to life the people who have lost hope for a normal existence.

Rose: stories, legends from Russia

The first mention of an angelic flower brought to the territory of Rus, and later of tsarist Russia, dates from the 17th century. The rose was widely spread under Catherine II. Proof of this is the story of a sentry guarding the territory for more than 50 years, five hundred paces from the eastern pavilion, where the flower once grew.

General Klinger, who accompanied Empress Maria Feodorovna, the mother of Emperor Nicholas I, to Tsarskoe Selo, noticed in the guard garden. He was surprised by the place of the sentry. The general did not see any sense in terms of security. When Klinger got to the bottom of the truth, it became known that since the reign of Catherine II there was an order to protect the mentioned place in the garden after the appearance of a flowering rose there. The Empress liked the flower so much that she took care of its integrity in such an "armed way".

Beliefs about roses

Superstitious people always look for the cause of the events that have occurred. Presence of any circumstances in the fate can serve as roses. However, one should not take the omens seriously, because the person himself is the creator of his future.

  • A bouquet of roses in the house promises prosperity, wealth and happiness.
  • A prick of thorns from a prickly beauty portends frustration in a close person or conflict.
  • A sign of luck is to see in early June an open flower bud.
  • Insincerity is the desire to give a bouquet, if the next day the petals of the gift began to fall.
  • The well-known truth is that yellow roses (and any other flowers of this shade) should not be presented to loved ones, because they are messengers of separation.
  • Legends of roses reflect the widespread use of this flower in the funeral rites of the ancient Greeks and Romans: they decorated the graves, and then scattered on the ground. From here went the belief that at the wedding it is better to refrain from sprinkling the road with young rose petals.

Symbolism

The prickly beauty is also used as a symbol in different religions and cultures. So, in India it is a sign of the divine word. In Christianity, a red rose is a sign of the sufferings of Christ, white is the sign of the Virgin Mary. The symbol of the Virgin is a white flower without thorns, which represents the liberation from sins.

In the Western religion, the rose bush has the same meaning as the lotus in the East. In Kabbalah this flower is considered a mystical center and the heart of creation.

In modern society, a rose is a sign of attention and an attribute of sympathy.
