In 1869, the English businessman John Hughes bought land from Prince Kochubey in Ekaterinoslav province. On the banks of the river Kalmius, not far from the village of Alexandrovka, he begins the construction of a metallurgical plant. For the development of coal, a joint-stock company founded. Botanical Garden
