The first mention of this settlement refers to the period of development of Western Siberia, by 1595, when the Russian Cossacks at the confluence of the Ob and Poluy rivers laid the Obdorskiy Ostrog. Ostrog was recreated in the spirit of that time and during the construction of the master did not use a single nail. For centuries Obdorsk was an outpost of the Russian Empire on the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was the harsh climatic conditions that became a valid reason for this region to be used to refer convicts, both under the tsar and during the times of Soviet power.

The indigenous inhabitants of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District have always been engaged in hunting, reindeer herding, fishing and trade. In 1894, the construction of the church of Peter and Paul, built without piles in permafrost conditions, was completed. This unique church was the first construction on the Yamal, built of stone.
