Roof garden - the rational use of the roof

In the summer, the roof garden reduces the heating of the roof and the space inside the building, and in winter helps to keep the heat. Also, greening the roof reduces the noise level and increases the comfort of household members.

The idea of creating a garden on the roof is better to introduce even before the construction of the building, in the design process. Then you can correctly calculate the parameters of load-bearing structures - creating an inversion roof after building the building will require additional reinforcement.

You can create a roof garden not only at home, but also a garage and other buildings with flat roofs.

In the inversion roof, the following layers are laid: overlapping, waterproofing, insulation, filtering material and drainage.

There must necessarily be sufficient strength of the overlap to withstand the load. The best option is a reinforced concrete slab. Slope to drains and funnels should be 2 - 5 degrees.

For a layer of waterproofing, fused materials, TPO membranes and PVC are well suited. The most economical and simple option - materials based on fiberglass, the most popular - glass.

For the insulation layer, foam polystyrenes that are not rotting, are resistant to high temperatures, non-toxic and have a long service life will be the best option. Warming materials should maintain their properties in a humid environment, which has gardens on the roof.

When sticking the plates of polystyrene insulation, you need to use an adhesive that is based on bitumen, which does not contain solvents. It is possible to fix a layer of a heater and without glue, a method of fusion of a heat-insulator and dense pressing to it of a foam polystyrene plate.

A layer of filtering material is needed in order to protect the heater from excessive moisture and prevent washing away the soil. Due to this layer the roof construction becomes stronger and more reliable. The materials used for the filter layer in the roof garden are geotextiles or fiberglass (available in rolls). Tightening of the fabric when laying should be free of warps and folds, and it is best to fix it with glue for glass fiber and glass walls.

The drainage layer, which contains a garden on the roof, is laid from gravel, which has a fraction of 16 to 32 mm. Its minimum layer should be 50 mm, but better 70-80.

Creating gardens on the roof, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarity of the inversion roof: waterproofing, insulation and the filter layer should be set on walls above the level of lawns by 20 cm in those places where they are adjacent to structures in an upright position.

The garden on the roof contains another layer - a cover from the soil in which the planted plants will grow. Its height depends on the types of plants planned for planting in the garden: herbaceous plants will need 15 cm, perennial - 20 cm, low shrubs - 30 cm, large shrubs and trees - about 60 cm.

If there is a desire to admire plants in any weather or even live among them, it is worth creating a winter garden on the roof. Its frame is made of aluminum, steel or PVC, rarely made of wood, about 80% of the area is glazed. It is more advisable to install glasses with the property of conservation of energy, they will be able to preserve heat, and protect the garden from overheating.

Transparent roofing in the winter garden must withstand loads of snow and wind, be resistant to mechanical damage from hail, branches and other things. Therefore it is better to use triplex or tempered glass.

Having decided to build a winter garden on the roof, you should think over many options and nuances before starting its creation. After all, then something to change will be either very difficult, or impossible at all.
