Rivne (Ukraine): a beautiful ancient city

When it comes to the cities of Ancient Rus, for some reason, very few people remember Rivne (Ukraine). And it was founded in 1283 according to the official version. According to unofficial, local historians pushed this date back 250 years ago, and maybe even farther. What is it, a city that was the capital of a country occupied by the Germans?

A bit of history

The regional center belongs to the historical region of Volyn and is located in the north-western part of the country. Exactly (Ukraine) marks the day of the city on the last Sunday in August.

1283 year - the date of the first mention of the name of the settlement, which was part of the Galicia-Volyn principality. But during excavations in the central part of Rivne archaeologists discovered objects dating from the tenth century. These are the remains of buildings, pottery from ceramics, weapons. It remains to find only the legendary arch, which flaunts on the arms of the city.

The first version says that it means the terrain on which the city is located - a lowland plain. In the documents of early years, occasionally, but there are other toponyms - Rovno, Rovensk. But there is another hypothesis, which says that in the past the city had powerful defensive moats filled with water. In support of this version, researchers lead the existence of a suburb called Zarovy.

Destiny of the city

The city of Rivne (Ukraine) is beautiful and ancient. He always had a favorable geographical position. That is why during the history he repeatedly passed from hand to hand. After the Mongol invasion and disintegration of the Galicia-Volyn principality, the city moved to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1793 it became part of the Russian Empire, and in 1941 the Germans chose it as their center in Ukraine. After the proclamation of the independence of Ukraine, Rivne became the regional center. The modern city is beautiful, green, cozy and interesting in terms of attractions that are available not only on the surface of the earth, but also under it.

Rivne (Ukraine) is very interesting for tourists. Among its main attractions are:

  • Museum of Ukrainian Art;

At 24 km from the regional center in the village of Klevan, which is an ancient Rivne, is the famous Love Tunnel. Local historians and enthusiasts assume that the underground passages, walls and caves are traces of the ancient city of Surenzh, the former capital of Dulibia - the Slavic empire that existed from 250 to 832 years.

The town of Surange is mentioned in the Veles book called Sourenge. Historians believe that before Kievan Rus in the territory of the Slavs there were tribal associations, which can be considered the first states. A thorough analysis of the Veles book and a detailed study of other written sources confirm this fact. The death of the city happened in the middle of the 9th century, when Kiev began to rise. Perhaps its causes are associated with an epidemic of plague, but perhaps it was destroyed by external forces. While this issue remains a mystery.
