Prejudice at work

Prejudiced attitude is, first of all, the perception and evaluation of another person or event without the desire for objectivity. Of course, everyone has the right to personal opinion, and how to form it (by what criteria). But when an individual is not just in a social environment, but performs specific job duties, holding a certain position, then there is no place for prejudice against either colleagues, or the boss, or the subject of his work. Otherwise, the efficiency of labor is reduced, because one of the features of professionalism is an adequate attitude towards one's work and colleagues.

Biased Attitude: Value

The explanatory dictionary of the Russian language Kuznetsova defines prejudice as an opinion that has developed in advance, without taking into account objective facts. Given the modern use of this term, it can be said that the dictionary is given incomplete meaning. Now, under a prejudiced attitude, one understands that which has developed on a personal dislike for a person: it can be caused by a psychological incompatibility or known facts about this person. At the same time, information that becomes a prejudiced attitude does not apply to the subject of work in any way.

Prejudiced attitude as a hindrance to career growth

Nowadays one can often face prejudiced attitudes at work. The human factor has always been of great importance in any work activity, and, for example, features such as psychological ability to interact, a system of values, as well as criteria for assessing the surrounding people, are different for many. Hence, precedents of prejudice can arise. As a result, the collective of the enterprise is plunged into intrigues, which occupy a considerable part of the time, which it would be better to spend for the performance of official duties. Quite often, and those cases where representatives of certain professions are biased towards the very subject of their activities, and this destroys the development of skill at the root.

Prejudice in the professions

In journalism there is such a thing as an objective submission of material. The coverage of events and facts requires objectivity and impartiality - this is one of the basic principles of journalism, non-observance of which discredits the profession. Today we can observe how correspondents make "one-sided" submission of materials, and this undermines public confidence in the media.

If a psychologist prejudices his patients, he will not be able to help them. This "mock" bias can be "tried on" to any profession, and then it turns out that in any case it leads to negative consequences: undermining authority, low-quality production, etc.

Prejudiced attitude of the boss

When the boss is biased towards one of the employees, it poisons the life of the latter. The boss has enough authority to "survive" a disliked colleague: send to difficult tasks without support, substitute for senior management, lower wages, impose more stringent regime requirements, etc. These cases can have serious consequences, up to and including dismissal.

There are three ways to solve this problem. If the work is not very valuable, then it is better to find another and get away from the ill-willed boss: so you can save time and nerves, because you do not have to raise such work. If the position needs to be kept, then you can turn to the higher authorities or solve the problem yourself. The last option is one of the most difficult, because in this case you need to find out why the boss is embittered, and, depending on this, compensate for the reason for his bias. If the subordinate does not suit the leader because of personal dislike, then it is difficult to fix anything.

Prejudiced attitude of a subordinate

If the subordinate is biased towards his leader, this certainly has a negative effect on his work. Lack of mutual understanding and unwillingness to interact with him leads to the fact that the work is not performed with the same efficiency with which it could with normal relationships. The employee should review his assessments and separate the personal from the professional. If the problem lies in the lack of professionalism of the leader (for example, the subordinate considers himself more competent and finds it unfair that he is under the guidance of an incompetent superior), then he must either overcome an acute sense of injustice, or leave this post.

Bias has become a major obstacle to reaching the career heights of many people, so it is best to avoid such cooperation in which individuals have a prejudiced attitude towards each other.
