According to the Greek legend Peon, a disciple of the amazing healer Asclepius, with the help of a beautiful flower, was able to help the god of the underworld of Hades and cured him of terrible wounds. Hades as a token of gratitude turned a young man into a wonderful flower - a peony. Therefore, this plant symbolizes the awakening of life. A person who has come to wealth and glory, must necessarily plant in his garden a peony, as a sign of prosperity, love, nobility and courage. For a long time peonies were planted in the most prominent places. This plant was famous for its magical properties and was considered the highest miracle. Some varieties of peonies were very dearly valued and exchanged for gold. Peony - a beautiful garden plant growing in the open and flowering from May to mid-summer. Its bright lush leaves and large wonderful flowers, having a variety of colors - pink, white, red - are fascinating and intoxicating aroma ...

In the world there are a great many varieties of this beautiful plant. The most widely represented are terry varieties of herbaceous pions, which are obtained on the basis of the peony medicinal, or the white-flowered peony, whose motherland is Primorye and China. These varieties are winter hardy, do not require much care and multiply well.

Grassy peonies have relatives - tree-like peonies, just as beautiful, but less common. These are deciduous shrubs that deserve love and worship because of spectacular decorative leaves and large bright fragrant flowers. All sorts of treelike pions are divided into three groups:

  • Chinese-European, which include peony with double flowers;
  • Japanese - with air and light non-primary colors;
  • Hybrids of the yellow peony and Delaway peony.

From a variety of varieties suitable for the central Russian belt, one can distinguish a tree-type peony of a shrubberry variety with non-marble but amazingly tender pink, white or carmine flowers. Their petals with a fringed edge are decorated in the base with a black-purple spot with a golden aureole of stamens. The old bush is laced with many beautiful fragrant flowers, a diameter of more than fifteen centimeters each. But in areas with a sharp continental climate, the shrub, due to insufficient winter hardiness, often freezes and requires shelter for the winter.

The least common, but from that most valuable are yellow peonies of the Yellow Emperor variety, cultivated only in the western and southern regions of Russia. Comes from Holland, it does not have a good winter hardiness and under our conditions it freezes, and even in botanical gardens it blooms rarely and uninspiring. Yellow peonies of the variety "Souvenir de Maxim Cornu" with large yellow double flowers are widely distributed.

The wild peonies, resistant to frost and having the most beautiful soft pink or dark carmine flowers, are forgotten and almost not cultivated at all.

The Crimean peony thrice-tied and peony narrow-leafed since the beginning of May open the flowering season.

Interest is caused by a short-grown peony. Even on small alpine slides organically fit in the general decorative picture unusual in color peonies of Wittmann variety or peonies of Mlokosevich, listed in the Red Book. Gently golden with large flowers, it evokes delight from everyone who loves flowers. After all, not only flowers are decorative, but also leaves: dark-green, cut into parts, they give peonies a unique charm, even after the flowering.

Peony evading - a wild- looking pion, known as the "Maryin Root", grows well under the shadow and successfully beautifies the shady garden. In addition, it is an excellent medicinal plant.

Breeders engaged in breeding new varieties of pions managed to obtain a separate group of these amazing plants - ITO hybrids. So peonies of Hillary variety amaze with an unusual overflow of pink-cream color petals with a dark cherry center. Equally unusual is the color of the petals of the Morning Lilac peony, which is distinguished by its compact size and early flowering time.

The list of varieties of pions can be continued for a very long time, because they all cause interest. Growing pions does not cause special difficulties. However, even without attention and care, a beautiful, luxuriantly flowering plant is not grown. And now you rarely find a house that does not have a luxurious peony bush.
