"Not" with nouns: examples and rule

The course of morphology is studied throughout the school program. Remembering all the subtleties is sometimes not possible. In this article, we will recall how to write "not" with nouns. Examples and rules are discussed in detail.

Particle properties

Without this important service part of speech, it would be difficult for us to deny someone or give a negative connotation to the word. From the very childhood, parents explain the rules of behavior to their child, using "no": do not touch, do not run, do not do it. With its help it is possible to express not only negation. If you use it in interrogative sentences with an exclamation intonation, then it can fully express an assertion. For example: "And who has not been to Moscow?"

In addition, this particle helps express the completeness of the action: "I will not see enough of you!"

Often in colloquial speech, we use it to express a touch of indifference: "Do not worry, but it will not be easier from that."

This negative particle can give an affirmative intonation. For example: "Do you still ask if you need to perform this task?" As it is not necessary, of course, it is necessary! "

"No" with nouns are merged: examples

In some cases, this particle can "turn" into a prefix. In this case, it will be written along with the word with which it is used. Consider the cases when this happens.

  • If the word "not" can be replaced by a close in meaning, that is, a synonym. Let's consider an example: "We immediately realized that the boy was telling lies." In this case, the word is worth writing together with "no." This is due to the fact that you can choose a synonym for it: untruth is a lie.

This rule obeys not only "not" with nouns. Examples of adjectives and adverbs prove that they are written with this particle on the same principle: ugly - ugly, slow - slow.

  • In the case where the word does not exist without "no", we also need to write it together. The word "sloven" we all know and understand. Try to remove the prefix from it and do not understand the meaning. This is due to the fact that some historical changes in the language have left their imprint on him. Previously, there was such a word: "ryakha". It meant a neatly dressed man. However, in due course this form disappeared, and his antonym remained. It is for this reason that we will write the word "slovenly" together.

"No" with nouns separately: examples

In order to determine how correctly to write a word with a given particle, it is necessary not only to know the rule, but also to understand the meaning of the context. Only then is it possible to distinguish when it is merged, and when separately use "not" with nouns. Examples of words are given below.

Let's consider cases of separate writing of this particle:

  • In the sentence there is an opposition, which is usually emphasized by the union "a": "Not happiness, but trouble happened to him." As can be seen from this sentence, the word "happiness" is contrasted with the word "trouble". This is achieved thanks to the adversarial alliance "a". Between themselves these words are antonyms, which is a prerequisite for separate writing "not." Do not confuse the opposition with the usual description. Example: "In the street storm raged, and by evening everything was quiet." The adversary "a" in this case does not give us the right to write the word "bad weather" separately. There is no antonym to the word "weather" in the sentence, only the description of the day is given here.
  • Difficulties arise when there is no explicit opposition, but only implied. In this case, we will not be able to write "not" with nouns together. Examples: "Unfortunately, I'm not a doctor, so I'm not likely to help you."

As you can see, there is no any alliance pointing to adversity. However, we understand that there is a clear denial: a person is not a doctor. We can add to this sentence mentally, then it becomes clear that the word is spelled separately: "I'm not a doctor (but a firefighter, engineer, teacher), so I hardly help you."

Thus, we conclude that the opposition may not be explicit, but only implied.

Exercises

In order to work out writing "not" with nouns, you can perform tasks on this topic.

  1. Open the brackets: cunning (not) a friend; Tell (not) the sheep; To meet (not) a lord; Say (not) the truth, but a lie; Today (not) Saturday.
  2. Compose word combinations with words so that each of the words is written together and separately with the particle "not": weather, happiness, buddy.
