Non-combustible materials for wall finishing

Activities for facing walls often impose on the contractor serious restrictions on the choice of suitable materials. Depending on the place of use of the finishes, high requirements for decorativeness, moisture resistance and environmental safety of the coating may be required. The refractoriness of the facing does not always come to the forefront, but this quality should be taken into account for security reasons. Today, incombustible materials for finishing are available in different formats and sizes, so you can make the best choice for any room.

Fireproof panels

This is a vast group of cladding coatings that are resistant to the effects of fire and elevated temperatures. The features of such panels include the absence of harmful vapors in conditions of direct contact with the flame. In other words, during a fire, a room with such a decoration does not just prevent the spread of fire, but also does not pose a threat of toxic poisoning. In terms of other consumer qualities, non-combustible material for walls in the form of panels is quite diverse. In this category, you can find sheets with attractive exterior finish on the basis of laminated coverings, and waterproof slabs, as well as material with increased mechanical resistance. The combination of these properties is determined by the specific composition of the panel, so their varieties should be considered separately.

Kinds of non-combustible panels

The most popular are sheets on a silicate-calcium basis. This material is non-toxic, environmentally neutral, is not afraid of moisture and is flexible enough during installation. That is, silicate-calcium panels can be completely decorated surfaces of the walls of a dwelling without fear of spreading a fire. If the question is what kind of non-combustible materials are better for commercial and public facilities, then it is worth turning to glass-magnesite slabs. This modification of the silicate-calcium filler, which provides higher performance. In particular, glass-magnesite-based panels are distinguished by their high rigidity and strength, but at the same time they retain their resistance to fire effects. Rigidity to panels is given by glass fiber reinforcement with a double structure.

Drywall

Another type of non-combustible panels, quite well known in the circles of professionals, and among ordinary homeowners. True, in this case it is precisely the fire-resistant modification of gypsum board, since in standard designs it refers to combustible finishing. Refractory plates of this type can withstand up to 20 minutes of direct contact with the flame. This indicator is far from record values and even to the average it is difficult to attribute, but this disadvantage is leveled by a low price. The fact is that incombustible materials on the same silicate-calcium basis are calculated to meet high fire safety requirements, and therefore are more expensive. In the case of gypsum plasterboard, you can expect to receive an inexpensive but externally attractive coating that has basic fire protection.

Non-flammable wallpaper

As in the case of gypsum-based panels, fire-resistant versions are also found in the families of traditional finishing materials. In particular, the latest modifications of fiberglass wallpaper can be considered as a full-fledged fire retardant coating with a decorative effect. The material is based on special threads made of natural raw materials. The composition generally includes quartz sand, which forms a fiberglass structure. To the characteristics that incombustible materials of this type possess, include a low absorbent capacity. This means that during the operation, the coating can be washed with water and foam. As for other properties, they fully meet the requirements for modern materials - both in decorative terms, and in terms of resistance to mechanical damage and natural deformation.

Non-combustible materials made of cloth

Finishing in the form of fabric has been used by designers for several decades, but today this material is separately in the general range and is in demand only among connoisseurs of the original texture on the walls. Anyway, in this family you can find interesting solutions in terms of decorative qualities, and in terms of providing protection from fire. Manufacturers initially form a fabric base using traditional technologies, after which they process the material with flame retardant solutions. The fibers themselves, from which fabric incombustible materials are made, are polyester substances that contribute to the preservation of the original structure of the fabric for many years of operation. By the way, this decoration is used not only in the facing of the walls of the premises, but is also widely used in the design of transport interiors.

Mineral wool

It happens that the use of materials with refractory qualities for one reason or another does not justify itself. In such situations, the output becomes a separate coating device. If the combustible and noncombustible materials are correctly arranged in the same finish, it is quite realistic to achieve the necessary qualities in the form of no toxicity, smoke formation and the risk of ignition in case of fire. Mineral wool can be an auxiliary component as one of the most common insulators with refractory qualities. The advantages of this solution include the ability to provide other useful properties - for example, heat and sound insulation effect.

Conclusion

Proper protection against the spread of fire still is not limited to just the decoration of the walls. Appropriate requirements for refractoriness should also be applied to floor coverings, the wood and synthetic base of which also represents a fire hazard. In this regard, it should be noted that many non - combustible materials for wall finishing are also suitable for the design of other surfaces. Some of the panels, for example, have a universal purpose. Of course, this is not always possible in this way to withstand the conceived stylistic effect in interior design, but the integrity of the refractory finish is a great help in terms of fire safety. But combined variants from several types of fire-resistant coatings can become no less worthy protection, provided that quality installation is performed.
