"Owl" (the full name of the motorcycle "Sunrise Owl") is a descendant of the famous "Kovrovets" (model "K-175"), produced by the Degtyarev (ZiD) plant from 1957 to 1965.

An interesting and long history of existence, a repeated change in appearance and characteristics. All this is the "Owl" motorcycle. Photos of various issues clearly confirm this.

The engine is the heart of a motorcycle

Motorcycle "Owl" is equipped with a cylindrical two-stroke engine with an air cooling system, the working volume of which is 173.9 cubic centimeters. The cylinder diameter is 61.72 millimeters, the piston stroke is 58.5 millimeters.

Motorcycle "Owl": first issues

Initially, this model had a single-cylinder two-stroke engine, a two-channel loop blowdown for the Schnürle patent and a four-speed gearbox. Engine power was twenty and a half horsepower at 6300-7500 rpm. The model had contact ignition, a torque of up to 14 Nm at 5100 rpm, a G-411 generator, a different form of fuel tank, a trunk and a guard to protect the lap of a motorcyclist. The maximum speed was eighty and a half kilometers per hour, dry weight - two hundred and twenty and a half kilograms.

The beginning of modernization

A few years after the first release, the designers had technical solutions that were aimed at improving performance, reliability, and improving the appearance. In 1976 the motorcycle "Owl" underwent modernization.

The improved version was externally different from the previous round shape of the turn signal lamps (they were rectangular before), the tail lights and the silencer of the new shape.

A new light-signaling device, a non-contact electronic ignition system, a new silencer was used. Engine power was twenty and a half horsepower, torque - 15 Nm at 6300 rpm. The maximum speed is eighty-five and a half kilometers per hour, the dry weight is two hundred and twenty-two and a half kilograms.

Model "Owl 200" in 1977-1979: the thirst for speed

During this period the designers made a lot of efforts to significantly increase the engine power, which increased to twenty four and a half horsepower at 6700-7900 rpm, retaining the previous working volume of 173.7 cubic centimeters and a maximum torque of 1.6 kgf · M (16 Nm) at 5600 rpm.

Due to the change in the channel configuration in the cylinder, the crankcase and the new cylinder head, the compression ratio increased to 10.4. A mechanical change in the front fork was made: the diameter of the pipe increased and the shock absorber was maximized for that time. The fork was increased by twenty millimeters and amounted to one hundred sixty-nine and a half. Now the motorcycle "Owl 200" began to maximize the speed to one hundred and five kilometers per hour, while its dry weight was one hundred and twenty one kilograms.

Model "Owl 175" in 1981-1983: a large gasoline tank and an improved brake

In 1981-1983, the fuel tank was replaced, which began to accommodate three and a half liters of fuel more, as well as the intake system, rear shock absorbers. Thanks to the design solutions, the "Owl 175" motorcycle received a high energy intensity, the new batteries settled at an angle of twelve degrees to the vertical, which provided the wheels with a stroke of one hundred and fifty-nine and a half millimeters.

In addition, the upgraded model uses a modernized brake, enlarged from one hundred and twenty-five to one hundred and sixty millimeters in diameter of the brake drum, wheels, a G-427 generator with a rated voltage of 7 V, and a saddle. The maximum speed was still one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour, and the dry weight was one hundred twenty-five and a half kilograms.

Motorcycle "Owl": characteristics of the model of 1983-1985

In 1983-1985, the edge of the cylinder acquired an increased cooling surface. Some of the engines began to be equipped with a carburetor of Czechoslovak production, which was in great demand in Soviet times and was a huge deficit. The novelty was the installation of a new twelve-volt electrical equipment:

  • FG-137B headlamps with diffusers of the "European beam" type;
  • New taillights with side reflectors.

Over the headlights were installed blocks of control devices in the plastic version: indicator lamps indicator lamps, ignition, dipped and driving, speedometer.

In addition, anti-theft locks were installed. The front shock absorber received a rubber corrugated cover, which made it possible to prevent dust from getting into it. The modernized Zid Sova motorcycle received a new profiled flap on the front wheel, a kickstarter lever with a folding pedal instead of a one-piece, a driver's hinged footrest, a rear-view mirror. At a maximum speed, developing up to one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour, the dry weight was one hundred and twenty-two and a half kilograms.

In 1985, the motorcycle received a new sports steering wheel with lintels, a safety arch, two rear-view mirrors, special tourist equipment (rear trunk with side section, side bag made of genuine leather, a bag-plate on the fuel tank). The motorcycle is decorated with new inscriptions on the tank and on the lid of the tool box, which are made of special lavsan film. The maximum speed was one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour, dry weight - one hundred and twenty five and a half kilograms.

Changes in 1989: a new engine and increased power

In 1989, a new engine was installed on the old chassis, which had a special flap valve. The upgraded engine was distinguished by a cylinder that had a five-channel purge and two exhaust ports. The diameter of the cylinder was increased from 61.5 to 63.5 millimeters, the skirt of the piston was also increased.

The petal valves at the inlet reduced fuel consumption to 4.2 liters by 159 kilometers, and also reduced the level of toxicity of the exhaust gas. Power rose to 35.5 liters. from. At 6000 rpm, the maximum torque - up to 17 Nm at 5500 rpm. The engine has one muffler. The helm of the motorcycle widened, receiving jumpers. The chain was extended by three links.

Thus, we see that the motorcycle "Owl" characteristics for the years of its existence was very different. Let us consider in more detail the characteristics of the latest models
