Tribute to the Navy

"Russia has two real friends - the army and the navy," said the emperor Alexander the Third. And if the land forces were with our country since its first mention in the annals, then we owe the fleet to Peter the Great. He not only founded St. Petersburg, but also opened the very first public museum, and in fact, also established naval. The latter exists to this day. The Central Military Museum of the Fleet counts its history from 1709, when it was called a "model camera" and performed purely practical functions. Peter the Great ordered the shipbuilders to create a half-model of each manufactured vessel and to surrender it to the Admiralty, where, in fact, this institution itself was based. It was necessary to exchange experience between the masters: the ships were works of art that existed in a single copy. In addition, the models served as some analogues of the drawings that helped in the construction, at that time the drawing was poorly developed. Everything changed by 1805, when the production of naval units became almost conveyor, and in engineering there was such a thing as drawings. The model camera due to the loss of relevance on the orders of Alexander the First was renamed the Marine Museum, and it became simply a collection of historical and technical wonders.

The largest in the world

The central exposition of the museum has changed addresses three times in its history. Originally it was located in the building of the main Admiralty, in the 40s of the XX century moved to the house of the Stock Exchange on the Vasilievsky Island. At the beginning of the two thousandth anniversary, for the 300th anniversary, the institution was given a gift, announcing its next move. This store is one year younger than the fleet, but its collection is also one of the largest in the world. It was also based on the orders of Peter the Great. The new house of the Artillery Historical Museum, a collection of military-historical objects received such a name only in 1903, was already brick.
