Metro "Ploshchad Lenina" - a magnificent transport interchange of a huge city

Probably, for no one will be the discovery that Lenin Square was, and at the moment still exists practically in every city in the post-Soviet space.

Previously, it was always one of the central, and it necessarily installed a monument to the leader, in honor of which, in fact, the name of the geographic object itself was called. Shops, cafes and restaurants located in the neighborhood have always been considered one of the most respectable, and the metro station, if available, turned into a real architectural monument.

General description of the metro station "Ploshchad Lenina" in St. Petersburg

Not everyone knows that it was originally planned to name this transport junction in another way - "Finland Station", since it is located in close proximity to the Finland Railway Station. In the ticket hall, one of the walls is decorated with a thematic panel depicting Lenin, speaking to workers and soldiers in April 1917. From Finland Station of St. Petersburg trains leave in the north-east and north-west directions. In order to go to Helsinki from St. Petersburg, you also need to arrive at this station.

The second ground exit from the station "Ploshchad Lenina" is located at the park on Botkinskaya street. The round entrance hall, decorated with a wall of corrugated glass - this is exactly the design decision was implemented when creating this exit. The escalators that are equipped with both directions were once the highest in the world at that time: the lifting height is 65.8 m, the number of steps is 755, the length of the inclined part is 131.6 m. This station is not a transfer junction.

Any modern map "Lenin Square" in St. Petersburg shows without any problems, so difficulties with orientation on the ground, as a rule, does not arise.

A bit of history

The commissioning of the station "Lenin Square" in the metro was made in 1958. It is located on the Kirov-Vyborg line.

Its name, however, like the square itself, was received in connection with the well-known historical events that took place in Petrograd in June 1917.

By its type, the metro is a deep-pylon pylon (the station is located at a depth of 71 m - the Petersburg subway is one of the deepest stations). At the station "Lenin Square" three halls, divided by rows of pylons. Such stations were built in cases where it was necessary to avoid the destructive effect of rock pressure. Between the pylons there are narrow aisles that limit the flow capacity of people at the station.

Architectural features

The time of creation of the station "Ploshchad Lenina" and its environs was characterized by the struggle with architectural excesses. Today, of course, it may seem that its appearance is not expressive enough. Underground halls are visually perceived as equal in width. Cornice lighting at an altitude of about 2 m after replacing mercury lamps with sodium ones allowed to increase the level of illumination. Passages between the pylons are illuminated by white lamps, and the halls of the station are yellow. The walls are tiled (bottom - black, and above - white). Granite was used for floor covering of aprons.

Station "Lenin Square" for quite a long time connected railway stations of the city. It took more than 10 years to complete such a task, and for the first time such a need arose even before the war. Another feature of the object we are considering is that the line that connects it to the station "Chernyshevskaya" was the first one laid under the Neva. During the construction of this tunnel, a caisson was used, creating an overpressure to counteract the percolation of water under the river bed.
