Maximum and minimum thickness of tile adhesive when laying tiles

Repair is a complicated and long task, and it is necessary to prepare for it in the most careful way. Choose a general idea, draw up a project, purchase materials, invite masters. And do not forget to correctly calculate how much you will need wallpaper, tiles or glue, so that at the most crucial moment you do not have to throw everything and run again to the store.

Today we want to talk about the thickness of the tile glue. Usually it is this moment that causes the most difficulties for beginners in the field of repair and finishing of living quarters.

Individual calculations

If you have never before dealt with gluing a tile, we recommend that you call a specialist. There are many factors to consider when calculating. This is the type of material, the size and quality of the surface itself. For example, for tile and porcelain tiles, it is required to apply a different amount of glue mixture.

Of course, you can ask the consultant in the store. He knows what thickness of tile glue is recommended for the selected facing material. In this case, the adjustment will have to be made independently, since the consultant does not have information about the quality of the surface.

Preliminary preparation

At first glance it seems that all the walls are level. Proceeding from this, the average thickness of the tile adhesive is chosen. But attach one square to different places and try a little shake. If everywhere it lies perfectly flat - then you are lucky, or you already leveled the surface. Most often, the tile begins to "play", which means that all the gaps and depressions will be filled with glue, which will significantly increase the flow.

But this is the worst option, since after gluing the tiles on the wall will lie unevenly, which will greatly worsen the impression. ) и приступаем к выравниванию поверхности. Therefore, we arm ourselves with any material (gypsum, Alinex, Vetonit ) and proceed to leveling the surface. When it becomes completely level, let it dry out, and you can get down to business.

Kinds of glue

In stores today, a fantastic choice of materials, each of which has its own characteristics. Usually the consultant offers:

  • Cement glue. This is a special dry mix of cement, sand and plasticizers. Working with it is very simple: dilute with water and apply to the wall. However, in comparison with other materials of a similar action, it will have to be spent quite a lot. In this case, the thickness of the tile adhesive will depend on the type of work performed. When laying tiles on a wall or tiles on the floor it will be different. If tiles are used, then approximately 5-7 mm of the composition should be applied to the wall. However, for heavy and thick boards, it may be necessary to apply 7-9 mm to keep them for a long time.
  • Two-component adhesives are an epoxy resin and a catalyst. As a result, a very viscous mixture is obtained, which provides a strong adhesion to the surface. In this case, the thickness of the tile adhesive during laying will be minimal. If the tile is not too heavy, then it will be necessary to apply no more than 5 mm.
  • Dispersion one-component adhesive is a mixture based on resin components. Depending on the severity of the tiles and the presence of defects on the wall, it will be necessary to apply a wall thickness of 3 to 5 mm. This is enough to make your repair perfect for many years.

Tile Selection

Of all the options that are available today in stores, the ideal choice for wall cladding is ceramic tile or tile. The second option is easier to work with. The optimal thickness of wall tiles is 4-9 mm. In this case, you need to consider its perimeter. In other words, as the area increases, so does thickness. With a small tile it is easier to work, but it is more difficult to choose a pattern. Too thin products are of poor quality and are very fragile, and overly massive can begin to fall off after a while.

Flooring

In order to cover the floor qualitatively and for a long time, it will also require good tile adhesive. Consumption and thickness are variables, but we will try to outline the boundaries that will help you navigate. The minimum layer of adhesive composition laid on the floor should be from 9 to 11 mm. In this case, experts recommend that you focus on the thickness of the selected tile. Usually for a floor take not less than 10 mm. If you decide to create a tiled floor from small fragments, then you can use a smaller layer.

Armed with a level

The misconception of many people who first started repairing is the unwillingness to level the floor surface before gluing the tile. It is planned to smooth out all the flaws due to the adhesive layer. In fact, it is much better to first put a screed made of cement, and then a facing covering. Therefore, with the help of a level, check how much sex you have. If this is not the problem, then arm with a notched trowel with the wave you need (3, 5, 11 mm) and simply apply the adhesive composition evenly. Otherwise, you will have to constantly measure.

The thickness of the tile adhesive on the floor should be the same over the entire surface, otherwise there may be dips or bulges. All available defects necessarily lead to shrinkage of the floor covering, which is highly undesirable.

Maximum thickness of tile adhesive

Do not forget that it is not only the presence / absence of defects that matters, but also the structure of the floor itself, as well as the tiles used. So, concrete and porcelain tiles have a high porosity, which means that part of the glue mixture will be absorbed by them. If you put ceramic granite on plastic or wood, then it is better to use solutions on an epoxy basis, then the glue is applied 2-5 mm thick.

If the floor in the room is concrete, then it is better to take the cement composition. The thickness of the tile adhesive during laying can be up to 12 mm, but this is the extreme limit. Do not forget that with these parameters the surface should dry out for several days before you can go into the room. For walls such application will be unacceptable, it is better to choose other compositions that can be placed in a more thin layer.

How much material will be required per room

First, you need to calculate how many square meters you need to cover with tiles. We will not dwell on this. There are several ways, giving the opportunity to know the amount of glue that needs to be purchased.

  • If you know exactly the brand you will buy, then go to the manufacturer's website, enter the dimensions of the room, each tile and get the result in kilograms.
  • The second option is more complicated. Example: we take the consumption of glue 1.3 kg per 1 m 2 . Tiles measuring 30 * 30 cm will require a layer thickness of 4 mm. Therefore, the estimated flow rate is 5.2 kg / m 2 . That is, an area of 10 square meters. M you will take 52 kg of glue. It turns out that for every square meter will go for 5.2 kg. But if the dimensions of the tile change, you will need to search again for the required thickness of the layer and recalculate the entire formula.
  • You can roughly estimate the future expense. For this, we take ½ the thickness of the tile and the average consumption for the selected glue. Multiply and get the number we need.

Modern compositions

It is best to first visit the store and here already choose which of the materials is best suited for your repair.

  • Glue Unis. This manufacturer produces about 10 different products, but the consumption of tile adhesive per 1 m2 at a thickness of 1 mm will be the same, 1 kg.
  • Geresit. For tiles measuring 15 * 15, 2.5 kg / m 2 is required. The larger the area, the higher the flow. If the value of each square is 40 * 40, then it will take 4.7 kg / m 2 .

Similarly, you can see the costs for each specific brand. Do not forget that any work is best obtained from the master, so when undertaking repairs, try to enlist the help of a specialist.
