Marena dye (Rubia tinctorum) is a perennial herbaceous plant from the family of madder. The height of the plant is a meter and a half. The madder dyke is widespread in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and also in the southeast of European regions of Russia.

In medicine, roots and rhizomes of the plant are used. Extract of madder dye is used in urolithiasis as a nephrolytic agent. The use of drugs based on this plant helps loosen the kidney stones. Marena dyeing promotes a faster onset of the process of crumbling and the removal of small formations, as well as sand from the urinary tract and kidneys.

After taking medication, urine in patients is stained with a characteristic pink or red color. This is due to the presence of rubitric acid and alizarin in the plant.

When an overdose of drugs on the basis of madder dyeing, pain and exacerbation of urological pathologies of inflammatory chronic nature may occur.

The roots and rhizomes of the plant contain various medicinal components. The main include anthraquinones, as well as their derivatives. In addition to rubrithrinic acid and alizarin in its free form, purpurin, haliozine, Ibericin, rubiyadin, pseudopurpurin, purpuroxanthine are present in the plant. In the plant itself, some organic acids are found: wine, lemon and apple. In addition, the dyeing pigments contain pectins, sugars and proteins.

Ruberitrinic acid acidifies the urine, resulting in urine acquiring the ability to loosen the stones. Today, much attention is paid to the chemical affinity of the plant's dye components, which interact with calcium phosphate.

Preparations based on madder dye have also the properties to reduce tone and strengthen the peristalsis of the musculature of the ureters and renal pelvis. This, in turn, promotes the advancement of stones and, accordingly, faster removal of them from the body.
