Lakes in Italy: description and photo

When they say "lakes in Italy", they mean primarily Garda, Lago Maggiore and Como. Experienced travelers and connoisseurs of geography will be called Varese, Lugano, Iseo, Trasimeno, Omodeo. But in Italy there are more than one and a half thousand fresh water reservoirs. Of these, the lion's share is small mountain lakes. They were formed as a result of the damming of the river bed by an ancient glacier. But there are other lakes in Italy. For example, lagoons. They were formed by clipping with braids from the marine area of a certain area. An example of a lagoon lake in Italy is the beautiful Lezina. In the calderas of extinct volcanoes, water bodies are also formed. The most famous lake of this origin is Albano. It is located twenty kilometers from Rome, at the foot of the Monte Cava mountain.

In this article we will talk about the main lakes of Italy. These fresh water ponds are an alternative to sea resorts and will be good for those people who do not tolerate heat.

Great Lakes of Italy

Photos of these glistening blue waters are decorated with all the guides around the country. Like a necklace of precious sapphires, they are spread out on the southern slopes of the Alps. The massive mountain system reliably closes Garda, Como and Lago Maggiore from the northern winds, forming a unique Mediterranean climate. Here, lemons and oranges grow ripe, the region is famous for its winemaking and olive oil. In addition to this, travelers are waiting for medieval castles and baroque palaces, Romanesque churches and incomparable Italian flavor. The Great Lakes include the largest in the country of Garda, Como, Maggiore, Lugano and Iseo. But there are smaller ponds, no less picturesque.

Garda

The largest lake in Italy is located near Verona. Crystal clear waters, insanely beautiful landscapes, unique climate attract many travelers from all over the world. Rest on Lake Garda (Italy) is considered even more prestigious than in seaside resorts. The shores of this pond are covered with ancient towns. The most famous of them is Sirmione. It was famous in the ancient times thanks to thermal springs. The town is located on the peninsula, which goes far into the water.

Sirmione's tourist attractions are the Antique Villa Grotto Catulla, the medieval Scaliger Castle, the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Pietro in Mavino. On the northern shore of the lake is Riva del Garda with excellent beaches. It is worth a small trip on the tourist boat with a visit to various resorts - Limone, Torbole, Bardolino, Desenzano, Malcesine and others. And Castelnuovo del Garda should be dedicated all day. After all, there is an amusement park "Gardaland" with an oceanarium.

Como

"The standard of a prestigious holiday" - this is the glory of this lake in Italy. In the era of the Roman Empire here had their villas Pliny the Younger and the poet Virgil, and today George Clooney and other celebrities. By the third largest Italian lake, Como is easier to get from Milan - just forty kilometers straight to the north. The name received its water from the town. But apart from the village of Como, the shores of the lake are dotted with other resorts: Lecco, Varenna, Cernobbio, Menaggio, Lallo and others. There is an even and mild climate. The air temperature during the tourist season (May-October) is from +22 to +28 degrees. Como is considered to be the deepest lake not only in Italy, but throughout Western Europe (up to 410 meters).

But this does not attract tourists, but luxurious villas that make up a single whole with a no less marvelous landscape. Como has repeatedly become a decoration for films. But the rest here - for hedonists and lovers of a quiet pastime, unlike Gard, which "specializes" in windsurfing. From the "mast" of Como, you can find the following interesting places: Villa Melzi and Serbeloni in Bellagio, the Basilica of Saint Eufemia and the fort on the island of Comachino, Castle Castello di Vezio in Varenne, the Pioneer Abbey of the Seventh Century.

Lago Maggiore

The name of the second largest reservoir is translated simply as "Big Lake". It is shared between Italy and Switzerland. On the Maggiore there is also a border between the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. On the shores of the lake are many resorts. In Switzerland it's Locarno and Ascona. The best views open from the western (Piedmont) shore of the lake in Italy. There are resorts of Verbania, Cannobio, Intra, Stresa. In Lombardy are famous the towns of Sesto Calende, Besozzo, Anzhera. The most popular tourist attraction is the Borromean archipelago, especially Isola Bella Island. Almost all of its territory is occupied by the magnificent palace of the Cardinal, now a museum. To the archipelago in the tourist season ships depart from Intra, Pallanza, Laveno and Stresa. But there are other islands on Lago Maggiore: the rocky Castelli di Cannero and Isole with a beautiful beach. The Mount of the Holy Trinity, towering above Giffa, is listed on the UNESCO List because of the Baroque chapel located here.

Lago Albano

The size of this lake in Italy is small: three and a half kilometers to two. The famous pond makes the palace of the Pope Castel Gandolfo. Lacus Albanus enjoyed fame in the ancient era. In 395 BC, the Romans broke through a tunnel to regulate the water level in the lake. And in the fifteenth century, he was glorified in his "Commentaries" by Pope Pius II.

Lake Albano has a volcanic origin. It is located in two calderas. Get easiest from Rome. From the capital of Italy it is separated only twenty-five kilometers. Lago Albano loves to rest lovers of mountain biking, because it has very beautiful beaches. On the ancient canal, Castel Gandolfo hosts competitions in kayaking and team rowing.

Lake Bryes (Italy)

This pond is considered the pearl of the Alto Adige region. This alpine lake lies at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level. From all sides the water surface is surrounded by rocky cliffs of dolomites. The lake was formed as a result of damming by a landslide. This natural landmark lies at the foot of the mountain of Croda del Becco. The lake attracts tourists with turquoise smoothness and unmatched alpine nature. Despite its sublime location, it is possible to swim in summer. The lake is surrounded by a hiking trail, there is a pier and tourist boats are plying. To get to Bryes, the lake in Italy, the reviews are recommended from Bolzano, which is located in the province of South Tyrol. From this city a pond is separated hundred kilometers.
