Krasnoyarsk Territory: area, areas, climate and other features

Krasnoyarsk is the largest of the 9 existing regions of Russia. In terms of the size of the territory, it is the second subject of the Federation, second only to the Republic of Sakha. According to the administrative and economic division, the region belongs to the Siberian Federal District and the East Siberian Economic Area. The capital of the region is, of course, the city of Krasnoyarsk.

Description of the region

Krasnoyarsk Territory, the area of which is 2 367 km, occupies the 14th place among the regions of the country in terms of the number of inhabitants and has about 3 million people.

In the east, the region borders on the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Sakha (formerly Yakutia). Western borders pass through the Khanty-Mansiysk, Yamalo-Nenets districts, along the Tomsk and Kemerovo regions; Southern - the Republic of Tuva and Khakassia. The northern borders of the region are washed by the cold waters of the Arctic Ocean.

The region was formed during the USSR in the territory formerly occupied by the Yenisei province. The territory of the region in Soviet times included 31 districts, the autonomous region of Khakassia, Evenk and Taimyr Districts. In 1991, after the collapse of the USSR, the Khakass region became an autonomous subject of the Federation.

The modern administrative division of the province includes 44 districts and 17 city districts, headed by the governor.

Geographical information

The extreme areas of the Krasnoyarsk Territory pass along the regional lines of delimitation of Eastern Siberia and stretch out almost 3,000 km from north to south. In the north, Putorana's plateau rises, and the southern border rests on the Altai-Sayan mountain range. The highest point of the edge is Mount Kamen, whose height is 1,701 m.

Throughout the region there is a large river Yenisei. On the left side of the stream is the West Siberian lowland, and on the right is the Central Siberian plateau. The northern shores are washed by two seas: the Laptev and Kara. The Krasnodar Territory includes islands that are located in the water area of the Arctic Ocean.

On the territory of the region there is a geographical center of Russia near Lake Vivi. The extreme northern point of the Federation is also located in the region - it is Cape Chelyuskin.

Climate

The climate of the region is diverse. The Krasnoyarsk Territory, the area of which covers the temperate, subarctic and arctic climatic zones, is divided into 5 regions. The most severe climate in the northern region. High frosty temperatures, cold windy winters, short summers. In the Taimyr Peninsula, there is almost always a minus air temperature, even in summer it is often below zero. On the islands in the ocean, the frosty season continues throughout the year, and the land is covered with snow.

In the central, western and eastern parts of the region, a short hot summer with dry climate, a long severe winter. The southern ones differ from others in their warm climate and moderately cold winters.

Minerals

Russia, the Krasnoyarsk Territory in particular, is very rich in minerals. Deposits in the described region number more than 1000. The largest deposits of minerals: coal, peat, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Also in the region there are 300 deposits of really expensive metals.

70% of all deposits of coal of the country falls exactly on the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The region has major state deposits for the extraction of platinum, gold, and diamonds.

Water resources

In addition to minerals, the center of the Krasnoyarsk Territory is rich in water resources. The many-water river of Russia, the Yenisei, together with its tributaries, forms a unified and natural transport system. There are more than 3,000 lakes.
