Kovalevskoye cemetery in St. Petersburg

Thoughts about cemeteries do not belong to the positive category, so they try not to remember them without special need. But cemeteries are an important element of urban infrastructure. And in their appearance you can draw conclusions about the degree of civilization of the inhabitants of the settlement, and about the cultural traditions of the society. Famous historical cemeteries of St. Petersburg have always been very expressive and aristocratic. And this is a tradition that should not be forgotten at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Behind the eastern outskirts of the city

Kovalevskoe cemetery is difficult to attribute to the ancient. It was founded in September 1984 by the resolution of the Leningrad City Executive Committee. The Kovalevskoye cemetery is located outside the city limits, in the Vsevolozhsk District of the Leningrad Region. In the administrative sense it is a structural subdivision of the GKU "St. Petersburg Specialized Service for Funeral Affairs." The total territory of the churchyard is currently 110 hectares. There is a reserve of vacant areas, which can be connected to the main territory if such necessity arises. Kovalevskoe cemetery on the map is divided into fifty nominal parcels. Most of them have a shape close to a square one, and is divided into four "quarters". There are sites for burial on confessional grounds, as well as a site for the burial of servicemen.

Prehistory of Kovalevsky Cemetery

The first burials in this territory appeared much earlier. It was connected with such tragic events in the history of the city, such as the Great Patriotic War and the blockade of Leningrad. It was during these years that many residents of the city were buried in this territory, which served as a site for mass graves. Those who died from bombing and artillery shelling, those who died of hunger. By the way, near the place where the Kovalevskoye cemetery is located today, during the war years the famous Road of Life, connecting the besieged Leningrad with the big earth, passed. Currently, specialists in local lore are conducting research aimed at systematizing the available information about the places of burial of the blockade. Not least, this applies to the Kovalevsky cemetery. It remains to be regretted that the burial places of the time of the blockade are not marked on the territory of the cemetery properly.

The regime of the necropolis and the improvement of the territory

Kovalevskoye cemetery is currently open. The burials are made both in kindred graves and in vacant places. There is also a burial of urns with ashes, and burial in common graves of those who were not in demand by relatives. The territory of the cemetery is open for visits from 9 to 17 hours from October to April, from 9 to 18 - from May to September. The first of January is considered a day off. Since 1997, the church of the Saints Euphemia and Gennady has been functioning in the cemetery, it is possible to put a funeral candle and order a memorial service. In addition to places for burials on the Orthodox rite, there are sites for those who professed the Muslim and Jewish religion. On the territory of the cemetery, the necessary minimum of works on landscaping and gardening has been completed. Unfortunately, so far only the main avenues and the passages between them have a hard surface. To fully comply with the architectural appearance of the cemetery, modern standards still have a lot to do. Such work on improvement is planned to be carried out in the coming years, funds for the development of cemetery infrastructure in the city budget of St. Petersburg are laid.

Famous people

Thirty years of existence - this is for a necropolis is not such a long time, and to the category of particularly prestigious Kovalevskoe cemetery can not be attributed. However, in this graveyard, some people have found their last shelter, which left a notable mark in Russian culture and science. First of all, it should be noted Alexander Bashlachev. This poet, performer and musician was one of the brightest stars of the Russian rock scene. In addition to him at the Kovalevsky cemetery are buried: artists I. Godlevsky and N. I. Timkov, jazz musician N. S. Rezanov, film director N. I. Ershov, scientists Knorozov N. Ye. And Smolensky N. A.

Scheme of the necropolis clearly demonstrates some ill-considered numbering of sites. There are fifty of them, but they are not always consistent (in increasing numbers). Usually, such chaos in the numbering grows with the passage of time when new areas join the existing territory. But the necessary information about the burial can be obtained from the administration of the cemetery, the building of which is located to the right of the main entrance. There are also economic services and various kinds of commercial structures.

Kovalevskoye cemetery - how to reach

Near the territory of the necropolis is one of the highways of the October Railway. By the way, Kovalevskoe cemetery received its name by the name of the Kovalevo platform on it. In order to get to the cemetery, you should go to this platform by train from Finland Station. And also to the necropolis you can get on a fixed-route taxi from the metro station "Ladozhskaya". It should be noted that on the Easter week and on the Parent Saturday, the influx of visitors to the cemetery increases many times. These days, passengers are transported by shuttle buses from the metro Ladozhskaya and from other locations in the city. The number of rolling stock taxis is also increasing.
