Ignition on "Ural": electronic or mechanical, differences, installation features

One of the main pain points of heavy motorcycles "Ural" is the ignition system. Although at present the motorcycles produced by IMZ are equipped with an electronic ignition of Italian-made Ducati Energia, only about three percent of today's bikes are sold on the territory of the Russian Federation. Most of the owners are traveling around the country, using the outdated mechanical ignition to "Ural". The electronic one has a number of advantages.

Modern replacement

Such a system is considered obsolete for almost half a century. Motorcycle owners often complain about oxidizing and burning contacts, the formation of oil film, the need to constantly clean and reconfigure the ignition system.
Of course, inquiring minds have already found a solution to this problem, so the installation of electronic ignition on the "Ural" is not something extraordinary at the moment.

Electronic ignition for the motorcycle "Ural" is now produced by several companies. The most common models are the microprocessor-based contactless ignition system "Soyuz", the ignition system "Saruman", the ignition system "Stary Oskol" and the microprocessor ignition UKTUS-2. Unfortunately, the last two systems are quite outdated, although they are still popular. In addition, there is a huge number of options for self-made systems. Many owners of motorcycles of this brand themselves make the ignition on the "Ural". Electronic (or noncontact) in all respects surpasses the old mechanical model, whose adherents are only supporters of the postulate "the more ancient the better."

MBSZ "Sovetsk"

Sovek Ltd. has developed and successfully implements a microprocessor-based contactless ignition system for heavy motorcycles of the Ural type. This option is suitable for those who do not want to mess with self-made units. The manufacturer promises to improve the start-up in the cold, increase the stability of the engine by reducing the asynchronous sparking and optimizing the ignition timing, reducing the toxicity of exhaust, fuel consumption, stable start-up even with a battery discharged to a voltage of 6 volts, and preventing overheating of the ignition coil, Which was one of the main problems of old systems. The main nodes are a modulator and a Hall sensor. The installation of the Soyuz ignition is quite simple, described in detail in the instructions and will take no more than half an hour.

Care must be taken to ensure that the modulator does not touch the Hall sensor. It is also recommended to replace old high-voltage wires with wires with distributed resistance. Reviews of motorcycle owners are rather positive, although some note a slight drop in power. Since the Soviet motorcycle, which needed the replacement of a contact ignition with an electronic one, has a rather worn out engine, it is difficult to say how objective these estimates are. But many owners are very pleased with the fact that they installed this ignition on the "Ural".

Electronic ignition "Saruman"

The microprocessor ignition system "Saruman" is another way to quickly replace the obsolete contact ignition of the "Urals" without much trouble. Manufacturers promise the same set of benefits as the previous system. There are two variants of a complete set: with the Hall sensor and with the optical sensor. The second option is somewhat more expensive, but it is usually recommended because the optical sensor is more accurate and reliable. However, the responses of the owners of motorcycles are not as good as we would like, in general, the claims are expressed to the quality of assembly of parts. Another claim is that the ignition coil does not come with the kit.

Self-made electronic ignition system

Ignition to the Urals, electronic or non-contact, can be collected manually. Similar systems are collected by craftsmen from improvised means. The main components required for work are purchased at the nearest car market - a switch, for example, from VAZ 2108, Hall sensor and ignition coil. The latter is often taken from the "Oka". Additionally, the interrupt modulator is assembled. The reliability of these systems leaves much to be desired, since they do not always correctly adjust the ignition timing.

The quality of manufacturing the interrupt modulator is very important for such systems, but since many craftsmen do not have high-precision tools, this negatively affects the result. Since for many Ural owners their motorcycle is not so much a vehicle as an object for technical experiments, sometimes very worthy samples appear.

Installation

It should be noted that there are a lot of ways to install electronic ignition on the Ural. It all depends on the model. It is necessary to start with the dismantling of the old interrupter and the switch located under the saddle. Sometimes it is required to replace the ignition coil. Then a modulator is mounted on the camshaft, a sensor is attached to the cover and a new switch is installed. It remains only to adjust the timing of the ignition.
