How to lay linoleum? Tips and Tricks

Despite a rather long period of use as a floor covering, linoleum is still very popular. It is strong enough, hygienic, beautiful, and does not require special care. Positive properties are also low thermal conductivity and good sound insulation qualities. Since laying linoleum can even beginner in repair matters, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with a simple and sufficiently detailed instruction.

As we have already said, its strength characteristics are quite high, they are not much inferior to those of the same laminate or carpet. If we talk about the lifespan, then modern varieties rarely serve less than a dozen years, and individual brands give a guarantee of up to 15-20 years! In short, before laying linoleum, it would be nice to get acquainted with the assortment of shops closest to you.

The easiest way to lay it under the plinth. In general terms, before they start working, they are completely removed, and after laying they return to their seats and provide additional reliability of fixing the floor covering.

The laying itself is of two types:

  • Free when no adhesive is used.
  • Adhesive.

Before laying linoleum free method, you need to carefully prepare the rough floor: wash, clean from debris, remove the protruding hats of nails and align the bulging boards. After that, the linoleum is spread and left for one day (with the aim of spreading).

After this, you can begin to carefully trim the material, leaving between it and the wall space, the width of which should be no less than 5-7 millimeters. After the leveling and straightening of the floor covering it is carefully fastened using skirting boards.

Take into account, before laying linoleum in this way, it is necessary to securely seal the cracks under the skirting boards, since constant temperature fluctuations and a difference in air humidity negatively influence the condition of its surface.

Of course, stacking using adhesive compounds is much more durable. As with the previous method, you must carefully prepare the rough surface before work. When cutting strips of linoleum should leave a stock (not less than 6-7 cm).

After lubricating the back side of the material with glue, it is aged for impregnation for at least 10 minutes, after which it is applied to the floor and rolled using a roller.

Important! Before you put the linoleum on your own with glue, you need to measure everything very carefully, since it is not only difficult but also dangerous to tear off the clutching material, it's possible to spoil everything.

To completely remove air from under the flooring to be glued, you need to carefully smooth the material from the middle to the edges. If it is required to make the lapping, the adjacent strips should overlap one another by about 2-3 cm.

After three days, the edges are carefully trimmed with a clerical knife . Since laying linoleum on plywood is the easiest method, we recommend you to level the floor with its use before starting work.
