How to get rid of the smell in a washing machine: effective ways and practical recommendations

It's no secret that a washing machine, no matter how modern and "smart" it is, can work long and flawlessly only under the condition of proper operation. But even if you follow all the instructions to your assistant, you can face such a problem as a sharp and unpleasant smell in the washing machine. How to get rid of unwanted ambreys and, most importantly, is there a remedy to avoid this side effect when using an automatic "styralka"?

Foci of unpleasant odor

The first thing that needs to be clarified right away is where exactly, from what elements or parts of the washing machine is the ambre. The most common foci of an unpleasant persistent odor are the following:

• Rubber cuff (ring), which serves as a seal for the door of the washing machine.

• A tray (also a container or container) for loading detergent for washing and / or a channel through which the powder enters the washing machine.

• The drain hose filter and / or the drain hose itself.

• Heating elements (heating elements) and internal parts.

The causes of the smell of mold and dampness, rotten smell in the washing machine

Before you get rid of the smell in the washing machine, the "patient" will have to determine the "diagnosis". That is, to establish the cause of stench. This will help not only to quickly solve the problem, but also to avoid this in the future. So, the rating of the causes of stale musty smell:

• Improper washing and / or improper use.

• Persistent pollution and, as a consequence, multiplying microorganisms and bacteria in the above-mentioned foci of pollution.

• Incomplete discharge of water after washing.

• Wear of washing machine parts.

• Sewage and / or incorrect connection of the washing machine to the communications.

As it is not necessary: the most common mistakes that can cause smell in the washing machine

In addition to all kinds of contaminants, unpleasant odors in the washing machine can be caused by the following regular operating errors:

• Insufficient drying and ventilation of the unit after washing. The moisture that remains after washing and unloading the laundry can cause a damp smell in the washing machine. How to get rid? It is enough just to wipe dry the drum and rubber cuff, and then for a while leave the door open. In two or three hours, the washing machine will dry completely.

• Storage of dirty laundry in the drum. Moisture, dust, particles of sweat and dirt create all the conditions for microorganisms, so store dirty laundry better in a special basket, and leave the drum machine free.

The rules, as you can see, are quite simple. But unfortunately, a reminder of this may not be in every instruction to the washing machine.

Means for washing

The first question that can certainly arise: how do powders and other modern detergents, which always contain active substances and perfumes, cause unpleasant odors? First, the use of low-quality means of cheap components leads to the fact that the particles of the detergent are not washed off, but settle on the walls and details of the device. Over time, these residues become foul, and a characteristic odor from the washing machine will appear.

But even the use of the best powders, gels and rinses for washing clothes will not save you from a rotten smell if you do not comply with the dosage. To load the detergent, you need to focus on the dispenser that comes with the washing powder and other products. If you regularly pour too much, the effect will be the same as from a poor-quality product: the particles of the detergent, without washing out, will create pollution and an ideal environment for microorganisms.

All this as a result causes a rotten smell from the drum of the washing machine. How to get rid of the sharp smell that has arisen for this reason?

In addition to observing the dosage of the detergent to clean the walls and parts of the washing machine from dirt, it is recommended that you regularly empty the laundry machine about once a month, that is, start the machine without loading laundry into the drum. This is done in the following way: in the tray instead of the detergent powder is added a special tool designed for cleaning the washing machine. A special agent for cleaning the machine can be replaced with ordinary food citric acid (2 tablespoons) or a combination of citric acid and baking soda - the effect will be the same.

After this, the unit starts at the highest possible water temperature (usually 90 or 95 degrees). Then the washing machine is wiped dry and dried with an open drum.

How to clean a rubber cuff (ring)

One of the most frequent places for the appearance of the smell of dampness and mold is the rubber ring, the cuff on the loading hatch. Here, after washing, a little water remains, which can decay, and dirt accumulates under the rubber cuff. The consequence of this is the smell of dampness in the washing machine. How to get rid of it? The cuff should be carefully treated with a disinfectant cleanser and cleaned with a sponge. In the future, the rubber surface is recommended to wipe dry after each wash. The cuff that has become unusable should be replaced in the workshop.

Tray for loading washing powder

The retractable container where the laundry is loaded and the channel through which they are fed into the machine's drum are also at risk. Excess detergents cover the surface in these parts with a film, subsequently due to this, mold and mold odor appear in the washing machine. How to get rid of such an unpleasant phenomenon? Carefully pull out the tray, soak it for a while in the disinfectant. Then the container must be thoroughly rinsed with a brush (an old toothbrush is suitable) and rinsed.

The hole where the detergent tray is installed must also be processed. For this, a spray disinfectant is applied to the surface inside the hole using a spray gun, after which everything is peeled off and rinsed.

It happens that the mold has spread beyond the loading tray, into the detergent supply channel. You can check this by lighting a flashlight in the hole for the tray - the mold, if it is there, will be visible. If this happened, how to get rid of the smell? In the washing machine, you just need to clean the channel with a thin brush, by yourself or by contacting the master.

Drain hose and filter

An unpleasant smell inside the washing machine can often appear, if all the time you wash at low temperatures. The lack of boiling leads to the fact that the bacteria that cause mold and musty smells do not die, but accumulate. Not the least role in this is played by small garbage from clothes, which remains in the filter, hoses, on the walls of the washing machine.

How to get rid of musty smell from the washing machine, if the problem is in a dirty drain filter or a drain hose? The drain filter must be cleaned regularly - at least once every 6 months. Otherwise, the blockage in the filter will not only be a source of rotten odor, but also significantly hinder the withdrawal of water. In order to make a cleaning, the filter must be removed and rinsed well with running water.

The water drain hose can become stained if rotten residues of detergents and debris are collected in it. In addition to an unpleasant smell, this will result in the fact that there will be a little water inside the machine, also fading. The hose is cleaned by empty washing at the maximum possible temperature of the water. In especially neglected cases, the drain hose is better simply replaced.

Heating elements and internal parts

On the heating elements of a modern washing machine, the source of the rotten smell is likely to be what is commonly called "plaque". These are contaminations that tightly cover the heating elements generated from fine debris particles, impurities of water and residues of detergents. All this hat is sour and exudes an unpleasant musty smell, and when washing at a high temperature regime it can make out the smell of burning. How to get rid of the smell in the washing machine? It will help to start the unit without loading the laundry at a temperature of 90-95 degrees with the use of chlorine (if it is not prohibited for this model), citric acid or a special agent.

The smell of mold and dampness can also appear after cleaning the washing machine. In this case, the cleaner is most often blamed, but the reason is quite different: scaling particles have fallen off the heating elements, which have become an excellent medium for fungi or bacteria. If, after repeated cleaning, an empty wash with citric acid or vinegar left a smell, you will have to turn to the workshop.

Sewerage: when the reason is not in the car

It happens that, due to improper connection to the sewerage system or obstructions and faults in the sewer pipes, there may also be a smell in the washing machine. How to get rid? The means for cleaning and disinfecting the washing machine here will not help. It will be necessary to connect the machine so that the smell does not go directly, and a clogged pipe, which can be identified for a similar smell from the bath and all the shells, cleaned.

Odor from the fabric

Perhaps, it is worth touching and the cases when an unpleasant foul odor from the washing machine appeared due to the fact that a thing with a strong smell was washed.

Most often, the owners of washing machines can keep in the car the smell of a solvent or gasoline, trying to remove greasy stains or corrosive traces of paint. After such washing, a sharp smell not only remains in the drum for a long time, but also impregnates all the clothes that are inside. But if this happens, you can get rid of the smell of gasoline in the washing machine, as well as from the smell of the solvent, in only a few steps:

• After setting the water temperature to 30 degrees, instead of the detergent in the tray you need to fill in baking soda, about 100 grams, then start washing without laundry.

• Immediately after the end of the washing process, you need to carefully pour in the table vinegar - one glass will be enough. At the same temperature of 30 degrees, laundry without laundry starts again.

• The third washing is performed not only without laying down laundry, but also without any means in the container for the detergent powder - simply with water of the lowest possible temperature.

• The washing machine is wiped, dried and ventilated for at least 24 hours. To determine whether it was possible to get rid of the smell of a solvent (gasoline), any unwanted fabric item can be washed in the machine.

• Even with the slightest indication that the smell of gasoline or solvent still remains, the entire cleaning process must be repeated.

But remember that you do not have to decide how to get rid of the smell: you can not wash things in the washing machine after processing with these chemicals.

Preventive maintenance: washing without unpleasant smells

It is always better to prevent the appearance of dirt and stench in the washing machine than to fight it later. What you need to do so you do not have to worry about how to get rid of the smell in the washing machine:

• At least once a month, clean the walls, parts and heating elements with the already described method of empty washing using a special chemical, citric acid or vinegar. Not bad, at least once a month, run the longest cycle of washing with chlorine-containing products at a temperature of 90-95 degrees.

• Strictly dosing the use of detergents for washing and, if possible, do not use cheap or doubtful means.

• And most importantly, do not forget after washing the laundry to wipe the hatch and rubber cuff of the washing machine dry, carefully dry it through the open door.
