How to determine the optimal window size?

Windows in apartments perform several important functions. They pass sunlight, while being a protection against heat loss during the winter period. When building a house, you should consider the ratio of the area of the room and the area of the window. These figures may vary. For residential rooms, where people will stay permanently, this ratio should be 1: 8 or 1:10. It gives a sufficient level of illumination and heat preservation.

The size of the window is determined directly by the size of the wall. If the window is one, then it is better to place it in the middle of the wall, leaving the closed areas around the edges. This will allow using this part of the walls to install furniture. If the window occupies the entire partition, it reduces the possibilities of the owners of the apartment in terms of the convenient arrangement of furniture. Unfortunately, many apartments in the Soviet era were built without taking into account the convenience of residents, just complied with the technical requirements of building standards. The size of the standard window is affected by its configuration. According to the indicators that are prescribed in various GOSTs, the size of the opening affects the size of the window units and the methods of their installation. The opening configuration determines the final appearance and size of the window unit. Two variants of rectangular openings for standard houses are considered. In the first case there is a quarter (the part protecting the window from bad weather), in the second variant the opening is level, without protrusions. Therefore, making measurements, the gauger first of all pays attention to the presence of a ledge.

The size of the window for each option will be different. For example, the opening has dimensions of 1500 mm in height and 1200 mm in width. For a quarter-inch opening, the window size will be 1540 mm by 1220 mm. For an opening without a quarter, the dimensions of the window block will be equal to 1470 x 1460 mm.

A quarter is usually found on the two sides and at the top of the opening. Therefore, in order for the window to stand well in the opening, the width is increased in both directions by 15-25 mm. This window size is directly related to the size of the quarter. More than 60 mm, increasing the size of the block is undesirable. Otherwise, the light part of the window will go into the opening, and we will thereby worsen the indicators for passing light. On the vertical of the opening from below, a window sill is installed, a quarter is not there, so the height of the block decreases only by 20 or 30 mm. But here it should be noted that the presence of a window sill also can affect the size of the window.

Plastic windows, the sizes of which depend also on the window profile, decrease in height by 30 mm. In the resulting groove under the frame, a window sill is installed. After installing the window unit, the remaining opening is filled with a mounting foam. For larger quarters, if more than 50 mm of voids are left after attaching the unit, additional expanders should be used. They will increase the size of the window unit without reducing its light portion.

For an opening without a quarter, the calculation is different. Here take away 40-60 mm. Considering that the profile for the window sill is fixed at the bottom of the frame, it is necessary to reduce the window size by 20 + 20 + 30 = 70 mm in height. Wooden blocks do not need to be further reduced by the size of the window profile. In modern windows this groove is already provided in the profile of the box itself.
