The structure and operation of a hydraulic press

How to make a jack press

Thanks to the skilful hands of our self-taught people, today we have a large number of different inventions that allow us to ensure the fulfillment of complex tasks. One such device is a hydraulic jack press, which is quite feasible to produce on its own, without spending on the purchase of a ready-made device.

You can use it to solve various problems, for example, such as compacting waste after metal processing. With the help of this device, it is possible to deform various blanks, make holes in the necessary places. Since the hydraulic press is self-made, the garage is suitable as a workshop.

Required Tools

It is quite easy to make a homemade ram press. To do this, you only need a welding machine with welding electrodes, as well as a grinding machine for metal. In addition, you need a metal profile in sufficient quantity, which will be used as the main raw material for creating the press.

To obtain the necessary pressure applied to the working cylinder, it is necessary to use a hydraulic or manual pump. The most suitable option in this case is a hydraulic jack of a bottle type with a built-in manual pump. Also pay attention to the fact that the correct position for the produced jacks, provided by the developers, is exclusively vertical. Using the device with a pull rod down is not allowed.

For home use, you will need a self-made press from the jack, capable of withstanding loads of 10-20 tons. Next, pay attention to other equally important characteristics, such as its dimensions, weight, piston stroke and frame parameters. To obtain the necessary pressure inside the cylinder, a hydraulic or manual pump is usually used .

Homemade ram press: the base

The base will be a support platform capable of withstanding the necessary load. The base should be made as strong as possible, since the pressure is applied proportionally to the working nodes. Expect the necessary strength so that the frame is able to withstand the load coming on it with a margin, since a working press makes it self-made to break the frame structure.

The width of the frame opening depends on the size of the materials prepared for processing. Consider the fact that this figure can not be less than the total dimensions of the components of your press equipment. The height is calculated on the basis of the dimensions of the jack used, the required value of the free amplitude of the rod, the height of the working table and the expected height of the objects intended for processing.

The jack must be installed on the base, while the top of the frame structure will be used as an emphasis for the parts. The force applied by the rod to the object being processed must be transferred from the mobile work table. It is mounted on top of the frame structure of the jack. The bed should be provided with its free movement up and down.

You can obtain the necessary strength by making several stiffeners. Take a profile of a square or rectangular shape 50x40 / 50x50mm. If you do not have a product of the required dimensions, cut the large sheet according to the required parameters. It is necessary to attach the profiles one to the other side parts and weld their seams at the top and bottom. This will give the necessary rigidity of the base.

To make a hydraulic homemade ram press stable, you must weld a steel plate with a thickness of 8 to 12 mm and a size of 200х250 mm to the already manufactured structure. On each side of the jack two pulling springs are installed - one end to the work table, and the other - to the base of the frame. They are fixed specifically to compress the jack in its original position. The springs must have appropriate dimensions and rigidity.

Manufacture of a stop for a hydraulic action device

Press from the jack, manufactured by hand, must have an emphasis, for the manufacture of which the same material used for the welding of the racks is used. The length of the workpiece is the same as the width of the supporting structure. Finished products are welded together and welded to the supporting structure. During the execution of all work, use tools that allow perpendicularity of the workpieces to be kept perpendicular. Weld one to the other two metal corners in size 40x40 mm of arbitrary length (30-50 cm) at 90 degrees. Next, the welded workpieces are folded together and fixed using a welding machine.

So, we managed to keep the required angle of connection. You can add clamps to the resulting angle piece, which will prevent the weld angle from changing when exposed to temperature.

How and why to make a stubborn element removable

Another important element that has a press created by its own hands is a removable stop that can move along the guides and transfer pressure to the component. To do this, you need to prepare the metal pieces approximately 10 millimeters in thickness. For the length of the workpiece, make slightly less than the resulting distance between the two posts. Elements are welded on both sides.

Rapid replacement of the stop

To ensure the possibility of an urgent replacement of this element in the event of necessity and for its fixation when moving on the apparatus racks, two through holes must be made in the manufactured block.

Next, cut two metal sheets 100 mm longer than the manufactured structure. In the plates you also need to drill through a pair of through holes. To install the unit on the frame part of the jack, pick up the two bolts together with the nuts and washers, and connect the plates in such a way that they are on both sides of the posts.

Methods for adjusting the working amplitude of the rod

To change the working amplitude of the rod, you can use the methods listed below:

• At the top of the frame, install a screw drive, which will be responsible for the free stroke of the rod.
• Consider the possibility of using replaceable pads from the metal profile.

How to reduce the working amplitude of the piston

If you need to reduce the working amplitude of the piston, put an intermediate metal profile of a square shape separately. The workpiece must be of the same width as the gap between the posts. Weld the profile at the required distance. This trick will reduce the working length.
