Golubatskaya Fortress, Serbia: how to get to the object

The attraction is in the north-eastern part of the country, at the border with Romania. Golubatskaya fortress (Golubachki Grad) rises on the right rocky bank of the Danube, near the eponymous town of Golubac. The construction of a hydroelectric power station on the river in the 20th century raised the water level, as a result of which part of the medieval structure was flooded.

Getting to the stronghold is easiest on your own or a rented car. The road from the Serbian capital of Belgrade will take about two hours. In addition, the two cities are connected by regular bus service. The highway runs right under the Golubatskaya fortress, in a rocky tunnel.

You can reach the monument from Romania. For this it is necessary to move towards Orshovy along the E70 highway. In the village of Gura-Veyi, you should cross the Danube on a dam, after which you need to go west along highway No. 34.

History of the architectural complex

Historians have not succeeded in accurately dating the structure. It is believed that the Golubatskaya fortress "grew up" on the shore of the largest European river in the early 14th century. It is possible that earlier on this place there already existed a Roman settlement. Who exactly built the stronghold - is also unknown. Some researchers attribute this to Serbian princes, others - Hungarians.

Anyway, the history of the Golubatskaya fortress in Serbia dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. Already in 1427 it was taken by the Turks under the leadership of the military commander Murad II. Learning of this, the King of Hungary Sigismund sent several thousand of his soldiers to win the fortress. However, the Hungarian army was defeated.

General description and current state of the fortress

A majestic and fabulously beautiful fortress hangs over the dark Danube waters. Golubatskaya fortress consists of nine towers, connected by a system of walls and fortifications. Some of them are square in plan, others - round. One of the towers is half flooded by a river.

The walls of the fortress go down steeply to the river. If you look at the whole ensemble from afar, it is very difficult to make out: where are the natural rocky ledges, and where is the once constructed man. The thickness of the walls of the stronghold reaches 2.8 meters!

The height of the towers of the Golubatskaya fortress is 20-25 meters. The motor road winds directly between them, laying under the overhanging remnants of medieval stone fortifications.

Right behind the Golubatskaya fortress, the territory of the most beautiful Djerdap National Park begins. Its visit is also recommended to all tourists without exceptions. The main object of the park is Djerdap Gorge (or Iron Gate) - a narrow river canyon formed by the Danube Current.
