Fracture of the tibia

Each person's legs experience great daily loads. With excess weight, impaired coordination of movements, weak muscles, the load becomes even greater. And often bones do not cope with stress even without special reasons. This is the fracture of the tibia. Although these are not the only reasons for it.

They include: lack of calcium and vitamin D, with which it is absorbed, the fragility of bones in people of old age, the "fatigue" of bones, as in athletes, the main burden of which goes to their feet, small children, etc. Of course, we should not exclude people with chronic diseases that cause brittle bones. Although, in practice, in all cases there is an insufficient amount of calcium. A fracture of the tibia is a very serious injury, but it has its own certain levels of severity.

Athletes often experience "fatigue" fractures. They are extremely rarely open and the bones recover quickly enough. Fracture of the tibia in this case is only in the fracture. It has been developing for some time. There must be pain and swelling of the limb. Treatment does not require surgical intervention. For restoration, a cast is applied for a period of 6 to 8 weeks.

Fracture of the tibia in young children (1-3 years) is also rarely severe. It can happen because of a fall from the height of a chair, a staircase, a high bed, etc. There are almost no open fractures. Also accompanied by swelling and pain. In this case, the child reacts to touching the place of fracture, refuses to get up on his feet. X-rays are difficult to make, so the best option is to scan the bone. Treatment is carried out by applying a short bandage with gypsum. The timing of recovery is individual, but, as a rule, because of rapid metabolism, significantly smaller than in adults.

In severe cases of fractures of the tibia, both with the open and closed, the operation with ankle fixation is required. Depending on the nature of the injury, a frame structure device or pin fixation is assigned. Fracture of the tibia or large with open injuries and in the presence of infection in the wound requires the amputation of a specific leg segment.

Fracture of the tibia is usually a trauma of one bone-cartilaginous formation. The reasons can be either an excessively high load, or a strong blow, for example, in an accident. The method of treatment is the same - the application of gypsum. If the fracture is helical or fragmentation, then surgical intervention is necessary.

Fractures are particularly complex . In this case, the risk of infection is very high and careful examination and treatment of trauma is required. Fracture of the tibia with offset can be either open or closed. In any case, it is necessary to carry out prompt measures to restore integrity. Most often this is done with the help of pins. Their diameter is selected individually, based on the size of the bone (the age and physical characteristics of the patient matter) and the type of fracture (screw, fragmentation, etc.). Fracture of the tibia with displacement requires not only long-term treatment (about 6-8 weeks with a plaster bandage), but also a sufficiently long recovery stage. In this period, mandatory therapeutic and prophylactic exercises and gymnastics are prescribed. Duration of rehabilitation - 1,5 - 2 months. At this time, an orthosis, a tight elastic bandage, is always worn on the ankle joint.

In any case, a fracture is only a temporary injury, which can be cured and then walk. Therefore, never be discouraged and try to protect your feet from repeated injuries.

We wish you health!
