Do I need a steering damper?

The steering damper is a device reminiscent of a conventional shock absorber. Its function is to extinguish unwanted vibrations and vibrations of parts of the steering. Of course, the damper can not be completely extinguished by the steering damper, but it is possible to significantly reduce their amplitude and frequency to it.

What is the principle of work?

The principle of the damper is identical to the principle inherent in all shock absorbers. In the simplest model, everything looks like this: the basis is a container that is filled with oil, and a movable partition dividing the capacity into two chambers. In addition, there are special valves (holes), the size of which can be changed. The partition moves in the tank, thereby changing the volume of the chambers and making it possible for the oil to circulate through the valves. At the same time, the adjustment of the damping value is made possible by changing the size of the valves (or in some cases, their number) through which the oil passes. The larger the hole, the lower the degree of damping and vice versa. The partition, depending on the design, can rotate with an axis (such a steering damper is often put on off-road sportsbikes and motorcycles) or it can be connected with a rod moving backwards (such a damper is called telescopic, used on sports cars, off-road vehicles, special vehicles ).

What are steering dampers?

Now you can find two types:

- Telescopic (Matris, Tough-Dog, Toby, HyperPro, Pro-comp, Rancho), which are similar to shock absorbers: a rod moves inside the damper casing. The piston is fixed on it, which functions as a septum. Telescopic steering dampers are installed in different ways (first of all, it depends on the model of automotive equipment and fastening set), but more often along the steering parts.

- Rotary (Ohlins, WSC, Scotts, WER), which do not look like telescopic, but work on the same principle. Rotary dampers have a more reliable design and are more reliable when falling. For this reason, they have proven themselves for use on off-road motorcycles. However, this does not prevent them from using them on sportbikes.

Do I need a steering damper?

The main function of this device for an SUV is to improve the handling on the roads and any types of off-road. The effect is achieved by reducing the level of vibration. In addition, the driver's fatigue is reduced. It is also important that, after installing the damper, the wear pattern of the tires becomes more uniform, and this improves their grip on the road. The control of the machine becomes more informative, at high speeds, the course stability improves. Steering damper (UAZ and Niva, by the way, cars on which it is strongly recommended to put this device) helps on the off-road to protect the suspension elements. Correct installation of the damper of the steering wheel of the car is a guarantee of an impeccable and long work of the vehicle, as well as the safety of the driver and his passengers.

In most cases, the steering damper is installed between the frame (or body) and the steering rod or between the vehicle bridge and the steering rod. It is necessary to avoid installing a damper on parts that are strongly displaced when the suspension is in operation.
