Dmitry Rodin, commander of the crew of Fokker-100 company Bek Air

What is a feat in ordinary life? This is the highest professionalism, which is proved by the events of March 27, 2016 at the airport of Astana. Fokker-100's video footage captures how accurately the pilot maintains the balance of the aircraft so that the nose does not fall forward without the front landing gear of the chassis. The emergency landing took place so gently that it did not take any ambulance or fire equipment in case of fire. The name of the pilot is Dmitry Rodin.

Biography of the hero

In August, the commander of the Fokker-100 crew will celebrate its anniversary - 55 years, 35 of which are given to aviation. Born in Alma-Ata, he dreamed of the sky since childhood, enrolling in the Krasnoe Kut flying school (Saratov region) after graduation from school. He still remembers his first training flight, during which he almost hit a cadet, whose task was to assess the correctness of the pilot's actions during the landing. He raised either a red or a white flag. As a result, the homeland was lucky: the cadet showed agility and ran away from his post in time. And the offender got off with a dress out of turn.

Distributed in 1981 in Guryev, Rodin flew on the Soviet "Annushki" aircraft designer Antonov, returning to Almaty in 11 years. Here he was engaged in teaching, continuing to fly on foreign technology. This is comparable with the transfer from "Zhiguli" to "Mercedes", because the automation greatly facilitated the work of pilots. Transported goods to India, African and Asian countries, not having visited unless in Australia.

Flight experience

During his professional career, the pilot flew 13,000 hours, which is a testament to his vast experience. In the company Bek Air Dmitry Rodin came in 2014, headed the crew of the Fokker-100. The airline made a bet on Dutch planes, designed for a hundred with small passengers, which is very convenient for air travel. Its fleet consists of eight "Fokker", some of which were already operated by other countries, but were in good order. The commander of the crew highly appreciates the technical characteristics of the aircraft, stressing the absence of malfunctions during the flight practice. Of the five points for reliability of the aircraft, he exposes 4.5.

Never on board its airliners there have been serious accidents, with the exception of inadequate behavior of any of the passengers or weather conditions. I remember the hit of lightning in the windshield and the running of electricity over it, causing unpleasant sensations. As any experienced pilot, Dmitry Olegovich had to put the plane in bad weather, but the equipment did not fail once. Every six months in Amsterdam on the simulators worked out skills of controlling the aircraft in extreme conditions, including the failure of the chassis.

The hero's family

Father Dmitry Rodina dreamed of becoming a pilot, but he had to deal with the most peaceful profession on earth - build houses. He was happy that his son connected his life with the sky. His wife Alyona flew for 25 years stewardess, 6 of whom worked with her husband in one airline. The crews were different, so the spouses still remember how they waved to each other on the Bosporus: he just flew in, and his wife was already going to the airport to go home. Two aviators in the family - this is too much, so Alena has written to the ground, providing the husband a strong rear.

Dmitry Rodin was unable to convey his love for the flying profession to his children: the eldest son (33) is engaged in business, a daughter (18 years old) is educated in St. Petersburg, enrolling in a university of trade unions.

The Fokker-100 crew

The uniqueness of the aircraft lies in the fact that it is operated by a crew of only two pilots, coping with all the loads. Commander Dmitry Rodin was replaced by many colleagues. Partner for "Fokker" was a young Vadim Smerechansky, who came to aviation in 2009. The co-pilot also started with the An-2 and, despite his 28 years, had already flown 3,000 hours. He dreamed of heaven from an early age, for he is a pilot in the third generation. Having created a family and raising a daughter Vika, Vadim did not consider his profession too risky and even more heroic. Just a real man's job, where the pilots are responsible for the safety of passengers.

And on board the "Fokker" three stewards: the senior flight attendant Zhadira and two young guys - Alexander and Ruslan. It depends on them that passengers do not panic in case of an abnormal situation and observe all instructions of the crew. With this task on March 27 they will cope perfectly well.

How did the day start on March 27?

The working day of the commander of the crew began at 4:30. Dmitry Olegovich habitually greeted his "Fokker", slapping on the barrel, because he believes that he has a soul. The flight "Kyzylorda - Astana" was due, then flight to Shymkent and return to Almaty, where my wife was waiting. Nothing foreshadowed danger. The plane to Kyzylorda arrived on a regular basis, no incidents on board. Dmitry Rodin - pilot of the aircraft - personally inspects the plane on the eve of departure, it's a tradition. But in advance to identify the problem of the chassis was impossible. Although all aviators know that if there is a problem with the Dutch aircraft, it is hydraulics.

The ship climbed 116 passengers, including 10 very young children, some of whom were not even a year old. Their flight was supposed to be delivered to Astana at exactly 9:45 am. Everything was fine until the moment when the orange lamp Master Caution did not light up when landing, meaning the landing gear was not allowed.

Emergency landing

Someone would be confused, but not Dmitry Rodin. Aircraft - the design is complex, so there may be false triggering of systems. The pilot goes into the second round and again tries to release the chassis, but the nose post only comes out halfway. He needs accurate information, so the pilot negotiates with ground services, which will pass over the airport at the lowest possible altitude, so that engineers can determine the real situation. Having received a response about the non-landing of the chassis, it makes the decision to land abnormally. Within 50 minutes the aircraft circled over the airport, and one can only guess what the passengers experienced. Children cried, but the confidence of the commander was transferred to adults. Dmitry Rodin estimated his chances at 99.9%.

The main weight of the ship is on the rear chassis (95%), so the commander produced fuel to further reduce pressure on the nose. At a speed of 270 km / h the plane sat "on the belly" on a path specially treated with foam (in case of fire). This could happen if the nose stuck into the runway. But the commander kept the balance until the last, until the speed fell completely, after which the plane passed by inertia for the last 25-30 meters and stood, as if dead.

After the crash

Passengers greeted the crew of the ship standing, to loud applause. Nobody got a scratch. Only those sitting in the front rows felt the strongest push, the rear did not feel anything unusual during the landing. Dmitry Rodin, the pilot of the aircraft, left him last, still not guessing that from now on he will become the national hero of Kazakhstan. He just did his job, following the instructions as much as possible. But it made it so perfectly that Nurlan Zhumasultanov (head of Bek Air) was amazed that the fuselage of the plane did not suffer at all, preserving in its original form even painting. And the front landing gear of the chassis is subject to full recovery.

For the crew began a difficult waiting period for the results of a special commission investigating the accident. It is important to identify the causes of the emergency, which could be associated with a violation of the rules of operation of the aircraft. Dmitry Rodin sighed with relief, when the Dutch side acknowledged the constructive problems of the "Fokker".

Hero of Kazakhstan

On one of the May days on the eve of two important events for Kazakhstan - Victory Day and Defenders of the Fatherland Day - Nursultan Nazarbayev presented the civil pilot with the Order Otan and the Golden Star, the highest award of the country. Dmitry Rodin was not used to the universal attention, did not consider his actions as outstanding. He believes that he simply did his job, ensuring the safety of passengers. But in a peaceful life there are not enough such professionals, reliable and confident in their actions, who are not afraid to entrust their lives by going on a flight.

At the XXIV ANK (Assembly of the Peoples of Kazakhstan) Dmitry Rodin spoke from the rostrum, answering the questions of the gathered, including the president of the country. He was followed with a storm of applause, greeting like a real hero. Technique failed, but at the height was a man who overcame difficulties.
