Decompose - what does this mean? Decommunized cities

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 and the termination of the Warsaw Treaty Organization, active processes began in Europe to understand the communist past and the results of the hegemony of the Soviet Union. Realizing that decommunising is, among other things, investigating the crimes of communist regimes, governments began to open archives, create commissions and special judicial bodies.

Traumatic experience of Eastern Europe

Most of the Eastern European states fell into the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union far from voluntary. And this fact inevitably influenced the attitude to everything that was brought by the communist ideology. However, most countries of the socialist camp very superficially understood the problems of the Soviet legacy. For them decommunize - it's not so much to find the strength not to repeat the mistakes of the past, how many to try to shift the blame to external forces.

The population of such countries as the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia is undoubtedly entitled to certain claims not only to their governments but also to the Soviet Union which, through all available means, including military intervention, tried to keep under their control Independent states of central and eastern Europe.

The Ukrainian revolution and decommunization

For a long time, the Ukrainian people and their government could not decide their attitude to the Soviet past. However, the government that replaced Viktor Yanukovych was more consistent in this respect. Decommunized cities began to appear in Ukraine. This did not affect the Crimea, as its residents voted to reunite with Russia.

Special attention was given to the monuments to the leader of the proletariat. In Ukraine, something happened that journalists called "Leninopad". Realizing that decommunising - is, among other things, getting rid of any reminders of the Soviet past, the townspeople began throwing monuments from Lenin's pedestals. However, only the collapse of the sculptures did not stop there.

The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a package of laws that actually decommunized, which means - renamed entire cities that received their names in the Soviet period. The cities got new names, so Dnepropetrovsk turned into the Dnieper.

Disclosure of archives and parallels with denazification

Most proponents of decommunization believe that all countries where the communist ideology was state should take steps to investigate the crimes committed at that time. Ie in fact follow the example of the German government and begin to persecute the Communists, to prohibit all symbolism reminiscent of communism.

Some particularly radical supporters of this process believe that the state should deeper decommission. The meaning of the word for them, in this case, also includes lustration, that is, legislative restrictions on the rights and freedoms of supporters of the previous regime. However, not all politicians support tough measures on this difficult path.

Hungarian experience of decommunization

Inhabitants of Hungary on the experience were convinced not only of cruelty of own regime, but also have well felt power of the Soviet Union which has suppressed tanks of revolt of peace citizens in 1956.

For the Hungarian government, decommunising is not just getting rid of communist symbols on the facades of government buildings, but also completely prohibit the use of a totalitarian, from the point of view of legislators, socialist attributes.

And in this process, the Hungarian authorities simply leveled communism to German Nazism, and the crimes of their own regime towards the Holocaust. Now anyone who decides to challenge the fact of crimes or minimize their significance, faces a prison sentence. The court can impose a sentence of one to three years.

A similar law was also adopted in Bulgaria, where one person was convicted of it. Sentenced to seven years in prison, he was released on health grounds a year later. Thus, the new government demonstrated its differences from its predecessors, having decided not to ruin a person in prison. After all, unjustified cruelty descried the communist ideology.

Decommunize - what does this word mean in Asia

Through the efforts of the Soviet Union, communist regimes were established not only in Eastern Europe, but also in many countries of Asia. And often the political struggle between the different factions took absolutely awful outlines.

For example, in Cambodia, a special tribunal was established to investigate crimes of the regime of the Red Khamri with the participation of experts from the UN. The experience of communist rule was so traumatic for the local population and the political elite that it was impossible to deal with it without the help of the international community. In fact, in just four years almost three million innocent citizens were killed in Cambodia.

The Cambodian regime was so bloodthirsty that not only representatives of the past political elite, but even Christians, Buddhists and simple intellectuals, who were recognized as harmful class elements, fell under the repression.

It is not surprising, then, that after the fall of the communist regime, the new government first of all decided simply to rename its country in order to distance itself from the nightmare organized by the totalitarian government. Since then, Cambodia has become known as the Republic of Kampuchea.

Unsuccessful decommunization in Russia

Immediately after the end of the Soviet Union, liberally minded citizens decided to conduct de-Stalinization and desovietization, that is, to get rid of the symbols of the communist regime and again, following Khrushchev, to condemn Stalin.

On the wave of universal rejoicing, a monument to Dzerzhinsky , perhaps the most odious representative of the security agencies, was demolished from the Lubyanka Square. At the same time, symbols of Soviet power were removed from some facades, but on the majority they were still preserved. Preserved and red stars on the towers of the Kremlin.

In most Russian cities, the foundation of the ensemble of central squares, along with the city council building and the palace of culture, is still a monument to Lenin. This state of affairs suits far from all city dwellers and quite often sculptural compositions with the leader of the proletariat are being attacked by vandals, but after that the city authorities promptly update and paint monuments, trying to save them from the traces of attacks. Decommunized - the meaning of this word to the Russians is probably not yet fully understood. But it's worth remembering that time can not be turned back.

The Renaissance of the Stalin cult

It quickly turned out that decommunising is very difficult and long, and in the absence of a public consensus, it is almost impossible. Unfortunately, the consequence of the uncommitted decommunization of the country in time, was the widespread revival of the cult of Stalin. All new and new monuments are installed throughout the country, which is especially noticeable in the republics of the North Caucasus. At the same time, no investigations of crimes committed during his omnipotence were conducted.
