Castle Vaidahunyad, which grew out of the scenery

It all began in 1896, when the Hungarians celebrated the millennium of their homeland. It was a real holiday with memorable events, and the authorities did not skimp on various celebrations. In the heart of the city, where the park Varoshliget is located, an unusual exhibition called "Historical Pavilion" was opened, the exhibits of which were made of cardboard and wood.

Residents of Budapest and guests of the glorious city were amazed at the copies of those who played an important role in the history of the buildings. The mock-up of the beautiful structure, which was the installation of the Corvinas Manor in Transylvania, was so popular with everyone that it was decided to erect Vaidahunyad Castle in the same place, but from stone, not papier-mache.

Matyash I of the Hunyadi family is the favorite ruler of the inhabitants of the country, known as Korvin, which translates as "raven". In his honor, and was named the pavilion, which became the most popular at the celebration of the birthday of Hungary.

The main sensation of the exhibition

Vaidahunyad castle was erected by the famous architect I. Alpar, for it was he who invented a miniature copy of an unusual ensemble. The talented master prepared in advance for the opening of the exhibition and repeatedly visited Transylvania, sketching interesting structures.

The architect was pressed for deadlines, and because of the lack of funds and time, he understood that it would not be possible to erect a historic castle from a brick. In the end, he created a pavilion from improvised materials, which he called "a structure on chicken legs." However, the people liked the creation, and the visitors of the exhibition expressed a common opinion that the castle Vaidahunyad became the main sensation of an important event.

Building Attractions

Simple people heard the authoritative faces of Budapest, so everyone supported the idea of building an architectural ensemble, famous for the City Grove. So there was a majestic building made of stone, steel and reinforced concrete, called Vaidahunyad Castle. Hungary did not forget the merits of the architect, and next to the important landmark was a monument to Alpara, who left the cultural heritage.

For twelve years, the construction of a large-scale construction was continued, after which it opened its doors to all comers, and even the emperor of Austria himself attended the opening ceremony. Unfortunately, the building was severely damaged several times during the Great Patriotic War, and until 1990 a complete reconstruction of the castle was carried out.

Combination of architectural styles

The architect united in one place something that no one had ever done before. When creating the project, Alpar took elements from other architectural structures known throughout the world.

So, some parts of the capital's pearl can remind the legendary castle of Count Dracula and the medieval fortress of Shegesvar (Segesvár). In the left part of the monument adored by local residents a chapel is built - an exact copy of the church in the village of Yak.

Medieval fairy tale

The stone castle Vaidahunyad (Hungary), which never served as a defensive structure, has long attracted special beauty. To get inside the sights, it is necessary to walk along the stone bridge through the massive gothic gate.

Originally they were built on the shores of an artificial lake, but only a year ago the reservoir, which turned into a skating rink in winter, was drained, and in its place appeared an unremarkable lawn.

Complex of buildings in the Romanesque style

What awaits the visitors who first came to the castle Vaidahunyad (Budapest)? To the left of the entrance is the Romanesque part of the building, which tourists adore. It consists of a consecrated chapel that copies the church of the settlement of Yak, a monastery courtyard with openwork columns, in the center of which a decorative well is installed.

The ensemble includes a covered gallery with luxurious rooms designed for Emperor Franz Joseph, and later there was an administrative building inside which tourists are not allowed to enter. The Roman complex includes a corner structure, invented by the architect and called the "Tower of Torture".

How to get there?

For the entrance to the local landmark you do not have to pay, but to get to the museum inside it, you must give three and a half euros. A 50% discount is offered for children who arrived with their parents at Vaidahunyad Castle.
