Arachnoid cyst of the brain - symptoms

The arachnoid cyst of the brain is the formation that is located between the surface of the brain and the arachnoid (arachnoid) membrane. The cells of the cerebrospinal cyst are formed by the cells of the arachnoid shell or scarring collagen.

These formations are subdivided into congenital, primary, and secondary, which arise after surgical intervention, suffered meningitis, with Marfan syndrome and agenesis of corpus callosum.

How the arachnoid cyst of the brain is treated

Most of these formations do not require treatment, since they do not provoke compression or displacement of the brain structures. Intervention of a surgical nature will only be required if the cyst ruptures. This can lead to the formation of subdural hydroma, which causes dislocation changes in the structure of the brain. Such changes can cause the occurrence of various convulsive seizures and epileptic seizures.

To date, various types of surgical intervention are used. Indications for this type of treatment are: the presence, as well as the progression of seizures, the development of focal symptoms and other similar conditions. The arachnoid cyst of the brain is removed by carrying out an endoscopic operation. Its main advantage is a small proportion of injuries, no complications after surgery, associated with various foreign bodies. The whole operation is performed under compulsory visual control. If there are certain contraindications to endoscopic intervention, a microneurosurgical or shunting operation is performed. As a rule, after the appropriate procedures, the result of treatment is satisfactory. This allows the patient to return to his previous normal life.

Arachnoid, retrocerebellar cyst - education, slightly different from each other. Unlike the first, the retrocerebellar cyst is formed only in the thickness of the medulla. This cyst is an accumulation of fluid in the area of the deceased part of the brain. The liquid fills the volume of the lost brain substance. In order to prevent the subsequent destruction of the brain, it is necessary to identify the causes of death of a particular site. Basically, such a cyst is formed due to a stroke, cerebral circulatory insufficiency, surgical intervention in the cranial cavity, trauma, inflammation and so on.

The arachnoid cyst of the spine quite often simulates a herniated intervertebral disc. As a rule, it is detected accidentally during the diagnosis for any diseases of the spine. Basically this congenital pathology does not require specialized intervention. Only in case of detection of scoliosis or kyphoscoliosis, as well as accompanying complications, special treatment is required. The corresponding algorithm of procedures and the length of the course of treatment for each specific case is established individually.

The arachnoid cyst of the brain is more common in men. Symptoms of the disease either do not reveal themselves in any way, or manifest themselves at the age of twenty. In this case, the size and localization of cysts causes the severity and nature of the symptoms, thereby making it difficult to diagnose. Quite often there are headaches, nausea and vomiting, ataxia and hemiparesis, hallucinations, convulsive syndrome, mental disorders, and others.

Arachnoid cysts of various types are found in four percent of the population. Symptoms are observed in twenty percent of cases, which is often associated with the manifestation of secondary hydrocephalus.
