A construction superintendent is what a profession? Duties of a foreman

Choosing a profession, a person should clearly understand what she is, and also have a complete idea of what knowledge and efforts she will require of him. But sometimes people get the wrong idea about this or that specialty. For example, in construction there is such a position - foreman. Who is this? What does he do and what questions does he solve?

The essence of the profession

You can start the discussion with the name. Often, it has the main meaning. What does the name of the profession "foreman" say? This is most likely a person who knows everything about work. Dictionaries treat this somewhat differently. By definition, the "foreman" is literally understood as the producer of some work on the construction or construction of something. He belongs to the category of leaders. Hence it is clear that in his submission there is a collective of people who directly and perform these same works. In short, a foreman is a person who, by virtue of his duties, directly manages the construction of a certain object in a particular plot. Therefore, its competence includes:

  • Organization of the production process,
  • Account of the work performed by the team,
  • Monitoring compliance with construction deadlines,
  • The organization of work on the site entrusted to him, aimed at fulfilling the task entrusted by the construction management: commissioning the facility under construction.

Things to know

For the quality of work performed by each of his subordinates, in the end the foreman is responsible. This requires that he has specific professional skills. In other words, the manager should be well versed and able to do the work of any of his employees. Of course, he should not work for them, but he must understand and understand what they are doing. Otherwise, it will be difficult for him to exercise control over them. Perhaps that's why each of the foremen in the past behind them has many years of experience. After all, the site is usually carried out a variety of types of work: construction, wiring, finishing, welding, construction of various types of communications and others. And in each of them the head must understand. In addition, he must still know:

  1. Technology and organization of work in construction.
  2. The order of conducting design estimates.
  3. Legislation on Labor. The rules of HSE, BAT, TB and industrial sanitation.
  4. Building regulations and rules of work.
  5. Existing standards for commissioning, commissioning and acceptance of work performed.
  6. Basic economic concepts.
  7. The order of relations between customers and contractors (subcontractors).

As a result, it turns out that the foreman is a unique middle manager.

What the foreman does

The most difficult thing is to list the duties of a superintendent. They are of a twofold nature. For his subordinates, he is the leader, who watches everything that is happening on his site. And for the authorities, he is a person who is fully responsible for the work entrusted to him. As a result, a fairly heavy and heavy load falls on the foreman's shoulders. Based on the completed design documentation, he must plan on-site each stage of the work to be performed and monitor its implementation. To do this, he must constantly monitor the availability, as well as timely deliveries of raw materials. He must provide the construction site with personnel and bear full responsibility for each of them. In addition, the foreman is obliged to create on the site the necessary working conditions that meet all the norms and rules. After all, now he is responsible for the health of every employee for the entire construction period. And he directly takes part in charging them all salaries. The foreman must organize the work at his site so as not to violate the terms approved by the contract of the contract. For this he is also responsible. Among other things, the duties of the superintendent also include the preparation of documentation for the recording of work performed and the current scheduled reporting. So it turns out that any object is obtained exactly as the superintendent sees it.

The closest assistant

In the organization of the construction process, heads of different levels take part. The foreman directly obeys the chief of construction. But he alone could never so quickly solve all the problems. For these purposes, there is a master's unit to assist him in the state. He is not just a subordinate, but a kind of right hand and a faithful assistant. The master assumes the responsibility for the preparation of the work front. He must: study the drawings, make outfits, arrange people for jobs and provide them with everything necessary. The task is not easy. And who will be responsible for possible shortcomings or violations of existing norms? Again the master. The foreman only organizes the process as a whole. And the master and the brigadiers subordinate to him are engaged in solving specific problems on the ground. It is the master who is responsible for everything that happens on the site. And in addition, he still bears material and criminal responsibility for all his subordinates. If a brick fell on the head of the worker or he committed the theft, then the master will be responsible for this.

Requirements for a foreman

A person who claims to be a superintendent, in addition to specialized education and work experience in the specialty, must also have such necessary qualities as high working capacity, self-organization, ability to work with people. He should not be afraid of responsibility. After all, this is his job. Foreman, among other things, should be a bit of an economist and an accountant, in part a personnel officer and a lawyer. He must know how to plan everything well: work, materials, performers. He will also need skills in charting. In addition, he must be able to communicate correctly with people and be the most communicative. It is necessary to strive to ensure that his subordinates are respected, not afraid. Ability to properly conduct a conversation and unobtrusively defend your point of view will provide irreplaceable assistance to such a specialist in talking with customers and conversations with management. Even the appearance and manner of behavior should give out in it an indispensable organizer and a good professional.

In life as in production

Everyone at least once in life faces construction problems. Take, for example, the most common repair. If it concerns only the gluing of wallpaper or painting the floors, then outside help may not be needed. But those who decided to "upgrade" the residential premises in a big way will certainly need the help of a specialized organization. It can be a small private company or a large company that deals with individual orders. In any case, work on a particular site will be led by a construction superintendent. This is the person who, on behalf of the company, assumes responsibility for the fact that the works stipulated by the contract will be executed at the proper level and on the approved terms. He leads a team of workers, each of which fulfills its specific function. In this case, the foreman is not just giving up work and signing documents. He organizes the work and can, if necessary, give professional advice to any of the workers. Such a leader in this particular situation is simply necessary. And if necessary, he and the customer will explain all the points of interest to him.
